is he still under contract with the Islanders? I know they sent him back down to the Winterhawks back in October, but I am curious if he is elgible to be re-drafted this year, or if he is still under contract with Islanders to where they might bring him back up to NHL status this year.

Those kind of decisions are generally made during training camp.

Hockey draft picks operate more like they do in baseball than football/basketball though. Guys are often drafted young and even some top prospects can play several years in juniors (kind of a minor league for 16-20 year olds), the minors, or in leagues overseas before coming up to play in the NHL.

Is imagine hell get a real solid shot at the nhl next year. Not sure of the top of my head how he did back in Portland after being sent back this year, but as long as it was on par w how he played last year is anticipate home getting the same if not more of a look from the isles

makes sense considering watching the draft last night a lot of these guys drafted looked extremely young. And suprisingly skinny? You compare them to guys currently playing in the NHL and it's a completely different breed.

I think Nino has a real shot of sticking with the Isles this season...The main reason they sent him back is that they didn't want to burn a year of his cheap entry level contract as well providing him with another year of junior development.

Yes he certainly did...The last thing you want to do is hurt a young guy's confidence. With another solid season under his belt, Nino will be given a great chance to make the big team.

he should make the club.
if not, he's probably too old to go back to Portland, and would go to the AHL instead.

I think he'll still just be 19 this year so the AHL wouldn't be an option. It'll probably be a moot point though as I do think he sticks in the NHL as well. It's funny reading posts on Winterhawks boards with people saying how Johansen and Niederreiter aren't ready and will be back with Portland next year. Sorry guys but they're gone and not coming back. Which makes me happy as a Chiefs fan. :D

Bartschi will likely be back with the Winterhawks, though...Let's hope he can continue to develop because Lord knows the Flames need the help down the road.

No doubt the Winterhawks will still be very good next year even without Nino and Johansen.

The Flames got a keeper in Bartschi. He's been impressive every time I've seen him play.

Nino has yet to begin the first year of his entry level contract. If he makes the team out of camp he's going to have to earn it. They won't play him on the 4th line. So if he's not ready for top 6 minutes I expect Nino to be sent back to Portland. He's still too young for the AHL. If Nino had been born a week later he would have been eligible for the 2011 draft.

if those guys are back in Portland next year, expect a WHL title, or at the least a return trip to the WHL finals. Wish Portland would get smart and just get an NHL team. This market would thrive.

The Winterhawks were the favorites to make it this past season. Kootenay just got hot at the right time & Portland just couldn't put the puck in the net.

I wouldn't be surprised if Johanssen, Nino, Ross, Bartschi, Cunningham & Morrow all return next year. They could lose a couple of them though.

You make it sound like all someone has to do is snap their fingers and the NHL will come rushing to Portland. Oregon isn't even close to being on the league's radar atm.

wrong, it is on their radar. Always is when NHL starts talking about relocating a team or expansion. We are in the same talks as Seattle getting a team.
