Niners sign Safety George Odum

Niners sign former Colt safety George Odum to a 3yr deal worth 10.95M.

He's 6'1", 202. He's been very durable in his four-year career, appearing in 65 consecutive games while starting 10.

Looks like he's a primary ST player b/c he's gotten an All Pro nod there in the past.

Do we see him as a defensive starter, competition with Hufanga and Tartt, or just a ST guy?

Feels like ST player first that adds potential depth in the defensive secondary, and not much more. Maybe they hope he flashes and can step up to a starting position, or at least compete. Quite a few shekels though.

At first glance, I said ST too, but a non-returner getting a 3M/yr deal seems a little odd. I think you're right that they're hoping he shows more than ST ability in the SF system, as they're not just handing teh job to Hufanga--better that he gets some competition.
