I thought Shurmur's offense didn't use TEs that much. We sure got plenty of them.

I was thinking the same thing. We had 7 TEs on the roster before this signing. Is he a special teams standout?

Maybe someone can explain why this one makes sense.

No- he is not a special teams guy.

Another big 10 TE.

Can't say this one excites me. He has been an underachiever, about like another Heuerman signing to me. But isn't going to cost much.

No harm in the signing, just not exciting

Noah Fant- Iowa
Jeff Heuerman- Ohio State
Nick Vannett- Ohio State
Troy Fumagalli- Wisconsin
Jake Butt- Michigan
Andrew Beck- Texas
Bug Howard- North Carolina
Austin Fort- Wyoming

Not sure how Fort has recovered but he was well on his way to making the team before his injury. I hope Fumagalli develops more this year because as you all know I was a big fan. We can't count on Butt and we have a lot of similar tight ends now behind Fant. I think Fant and Beck are the only safe TE's going into camp right now. I know Beck hasn't exactly solidified himself in the NFL, but I strongly feel we have a plan for him as an H-Back.

I think we are going to have to thin out the TE room before training camp. Heuerman maybe the target give his cap hit.

I was thinking the same thing.

The TE is prominent in the Shurmur offense - it is just that he tends to use only one at a time - or in conjunction with an H-Back type.

Probably should create a Heuerman appreciation thread. Essentially the Broncos are making a lateral move here while saving just under $1 million. Not anything that moves the sticks for the team but just a cost saving move.

And yes the Broncos are not going to be in a ton of 2-TE sets but this gives them a run blocking TE that can help on short yardage situations.

Anybody got a good link to Shurmur's style? I am really not as familiar with it as I'd like to be. Formations, route concepts, etc. I know that Fangio wants an Offense that uses the entire field. He has said so many times, that to him balance doesn't just mean run/pass. Balance means that the D can't focus on any one thing to take away or any set parts of the field to focus on.

What type of offense will Pat Shurmur bring to the Giants?

This is a good place to start in understanding the quick basics. I can give you more in depth if you would like beyond this.

You know - if that's all they use him for - then use a olineman for that job.

I was just looking at some Vannett highlights. That guy is a big mofo. He's 6'6" and 260 pounds, listed. And he plays like a big mofo. I can see why he'd be used to block, and I can see how he'd be effective in a delayed route, and I can see how he'd be valuable in the red zone.

This seems like prelude to something else otherwise we have 8 TEs on the roster. I’m sure you could draft a TE as good as Varnett and in that mode.

What if he's the guy that can help with our Tackle problem? I was being a smart ass about not having 6 O-line to put on the field, but it seems that we don't have anybody good enough to beat Bolles out of the job. Who would you rather have in short yardage? An OT that can't beat Bolles or Nick Vannett? Or how about Vannett getting a chip in to help Bolles and then floating out to give Lock another option?

I know we have a lot of TE's on the roster. Fant is going to stay. Beck looks like the H-Back. Heuerman has been up-and-down. Suppose we keep Fant/Beck/Heuerman/Vannett? That's four TE's (not unreasonable) with a decent set of options on game day and decent depth. Feel free to swap out Heuerman for whoever you like more in that scenario.

Well if you have a great blocking TE it opens up opportunities for a few sneak plays throughout the year. It wouldn't shock me to see Vannett end up with like 10 catches and 4 of those go for TD's.

I also think this move is about Melvin Gordon. You want to have a great blocking TE that keeps teams a little honest about the pass game but at the same time can be huge in setting up the short yardage run plays/goal line runs.

It also wouldn't shock me to see instead of having a slot WR they move Fant into the slot and have Vannett in. They did this some with the Giants of having Evan Engram.
