Is shootout wins the second tiebreaker?

I dunno this seems kind of weird to me that shootout wins don't count towards the win total tie breaker. So the shootout win is good enough to get you 2 points like any other win, but it's not good enough to count in the win total tie breaker. I kind of don't like that honestly.

Pretty wishy-washy by the NHL, but hopefully this is a step towards a 3-2-1-0 points system where every game is worth 3 points and teams are rewarded for winning a game in regulation time.

that's my hope...i feel like it's weaning off the importance of the SO. i think that the next positive step would be 3-on-3 OT. it'd be still gimmicky, but not Shoot Out gimmicky.

But then again, this is the league that rewards goaltenders a Win for a shootout win and a Tie for an overtime loss...

Unfortunately there really is no good way to end a regulation tie. I still would prefer ties, even if they are lame. You can't have never ending overtime, the regular season is too much of a grind for that. You can't do away with some points for a shootout loss, because that means some teams are walking away with nothing after what essentially amounts to a coin flip.

that's why i like the idea of 5 minutes of 3-3 OT after 5 minutes of 4-4, then the shoot out. there's a junior league that does it, and 90% of their games ended before the shootout. better than the 70% of NHL OT games which GO to the shootout.

I know I've mentioned this before (here or swamp), but not sure if I got any feedback on it. How's this for gimmicky?:

After the 5 minutes of 4-4, go to a 5 on 4 with a goalie pulled, until one team scores (man-advantage or EN). Then switch it around, and the team to score quickest (or twice) wins. The home team gets to choose to go first or last.

I say skip the 4 on 4 completely.

60 minutes
10 minutes of 3 on 3
Standing ovation for goaltenders
Shootout

Everyone's happy.

that was being considered? because that's basically worse than the current NCAA Football OT.

Nope, that was my idea alone...which is why it was worse

EDIT: I still contend that's better than a shootout, which my idea would eliminate.

wonder which team benefitted by this the most to get it changed.

This rule change (and I laugh as I type that) will do nothing to change the Dave Tippett Phoenix Coyotes style of play (which is to try to grab a league/keep the game tied) and hope to win the game in a shootout. If you have a hot goalie, it's a way to get a team into the playoffs, but you're not going to be successful in the playoffs with that strategy.

I really hate the shootout. How can you take a team sport and award the team a win or loss based upon an individual skills contest? Ignorant if you ask me.

I believe all games should be worth 2 points TOTAL. Regulation, and then 2 OT periods, I don't care how many men are on the ice, just 2 OT periods and I'll be happy. If that doesn't get the job doen then call the game a tie and award each team 1 point. I guarantee teams stop playing for the OT point.

The other option its to call it a tie at the end of regulation, as far as points are concerned, and give each team 1 point in the standings, then continue with OT as usual and then a SO. The only benefit being that the OT or SO winner would get a win in his column and the loser a loss. This would then only be used in determining tie breaking status in the standings.
