Exactly what I was thinking, and others....I mean fuck didnt Harry Howell go fight a war and then come back to play hockey? Blinded by 1994, I guess.

So I'm not arguing in favo(u)r of Sundin as the Toronto pick, but I don't think it's as crazy as some people seem to think. He is after all the franchise all time leader in scoring.

Sundin was my favourite player in the league during his time in Toronto. Guy was an unbelievable player, did everything and then some. I'd probably still rate him higher than some others if it weren't for his dumbassedness during his departure from the team.

Yeah. I'd probably have him at 3 personally behind Sittler and Salming, but I don't think Sundin is an insane choice.

I think this is how ESPN does it's hockey research. It asks real hockey fans questions like this so their on air staff might know something.

I can think of very few things that matter less than ESPN's opinions on anything. They are everything that is wrong with sports and I am so happy they don't cover hockey. A bunch of well coiffed talking heads that know little or nothing, (so they merely say it LOUDER!!!!!!) and the only place any of those people would be considered anything close to intellectual is in a room full of banged up ex-jocks and idiots. In other words, their target audience. As my olde friend would say...I hate them like poison.

The Toronto choice alone says all you need to know about this list.

Yeah...up even if they want to stay "somewhat" recent"
Hello...Doug Gilmour maybe?

Borje Salming. He has to be #1 on the name alone.

He could easily be #1 on his own merits too.

Generally considered the first European player to be truly successful in the NHL and also holds several Leafs team records.

Not to mention coming back from quite possibly the most gruesome injury in NHL history (up to that point since Malarchuk was 3 years later).

Hello...Doug Gilmour maybe?

I love Gilmour. When I did the "5 best" thread a few weeks ago, he was my centre.

But the guy was here for 6 seasons, bookended by missing the playoffs and including two first-round exits. No matter how close they came to getting to the Final in 93 and how much of what happened is now part of legend in these parts, he did far less in a far shorter time than so many others.

Messier over Gilbert?Lundqvist?and most of all Leetch?

Clearly based on what he did over his entire career - most of it, tho, with another team. This is like saying Pete Rose is the most important Phillie cos of 1980. There's no doubt that Messier was instrumental in bringing NY the Cup in 94, but there are so many other players who had stellar careers for the Rangers, not just for a couple of years.

It's kind of interesting - half of the original 6 teams have players from before or just at the start of expansion and the other 3 list more recent players.

The man made a GUARANTEE. I mean, come on. That means something, right? LEGEND.

A great team won that cup in 94. The 89 Oilers were a great team.

It's ESPN. Very little happened on earth before 1989

Salming, Sittler, Mahavlich, Broda, Bauer, Kelly, Apps, Clancy, Horton... Just look at the honoured numbers list.

Sundin isn't a crazy choice for Toronto but my personal choice would be Dave Keon.

Won 4 Cups as a Leaf, while putting up good numbers.

Won individual awards.

Captained the team for 7 seasons.

Fought with Ballard.

To me he is a great player who encapsulates so much of the Leafs history, both good and bad.
