I really don't understand the goaltending totals. Yesterday Thomas had a great game. He made 37 saves only gave up two goals & it didn't amount to much. Today Rinne makes 41 saves gives up 2 goals & doesn't even get 6 points??

I really don't understand the goaltending totals. Yesterday Thomas had a great game. He made 37 saves only gave up two goals & it didn't amount to much. Today Rinne makes 41 saves gives up 2 goals & doesn't even get 6 points??

So, for Thomas, he made 37 saves. It's 0.10 points per save, so that's 3.70 points. But he also gave up 2 goals, it's -1.0 points per goal given up. That means he lost 2 points for the goals given up... 3.70-2.00 = 1.70 points.

On 4/15, Rinne made 41 saves at 0.10 points per save, that's 4.10 points. But he gave up 2 points, that's -2.00 points. He got the win, which is another 4 points for the win. But he also was credited with a giveaway in the game, which is -0.25 points. So, 4.10 - 2.00 + 4.00 - 0.25 = 5.85 points

The reason we set goalie points a little different this year was because it was too easy last year for a goalie to have a 30 save game in a win and end up with over 11 points. Point totals like that put way too much emphasis on the goalies and not on the skaters. A skater could have a game winning power play goal and only would have had 9 points under the old point system. So we changed the point system a bit this year so that goalies points and skaters points were a little more even and equally as important. The hope was so that it would keep the team points a little closer and the competition a little bit more competitive.

In reviewing how the new point system has worked so far this year, esls believes that -1.00 points for every goal given up for a goalie is a little too harsh because the goalies perhaps are getting too few points for all their effort in a game. So, I believe next season when we do this, we will changing this slightly for next year's playoff pool.
