NFL London Team Rumors: Mayor Boris Johnson Hopes For Permanent Franchise In 'Next Few Years'

The NFL’s London series has been a rousing success since it began in 2007. All three games played at Wembley Stadium last season drew sellout crowds of more than 80,000 fans, for a reported total of more than $32 million in ticket revenue. The overseas games went so well that NFL officials agreed this July to the Tottenham stadium deal, which calls for at least two regular-season NFL games annually in the facility from when it opens in 2018 through 2028.

Between its current partnership with Wembley and the new agreement with Tottenham, the NFL could play as many as eight regular-season “home” games in London “in the next five years,” Mark Waller, the NFL’s executive vice president for international operations, told Sports Business Daily earlier this month. The games count in the U.S. season. To meet that goal, the NFL will consider involving more of its teams in the London series, as well as the possible relocation of one of its franchises, he added.

Dumbest shit I ever heard. So if a franchise is located in London, every time they play a road game they have to fly across a fuckin ocean for 10 hours. If I was a player that got traded to that team I would be pissed. Being forced to move to another continent? Bullshit. Keep the nfl in America. Those European fairies have their soccer.

Move a team to Toronto if you want to expand so badly.I know it's not the same as expanding overseas but those Canadians in Toronto will sell out games, they're basically American anyway.

As much as I agree its just way too close to buffalo. The buffalo market includes all of western New York and Southern Ontario. Plus most the Canadians around here like the CFL and the NFL the way it is. So they still can be fans of both teams if they choose.

It's a pile of crap. What free agent is going to sign off on all that travel, ridiculous tax rates, and culture shock over there? They'd be a perennial loser because the second any player could leave they would.

The NFL just needs a new target location to extort communities with the threat of relocation now that it looks Like LA's going to have a team.

I love London games. It's great to wake up and watch football instead of twiddling my thumbs for hours waiting for the games to start.

You need to rethink your life if waiting 6 hours is too tough.

To the original topic, London also come with higher taxes and greater strain on your family. Even if the NFL goes there I don't see a ton of players flocking to join the team.

I prefer them to start earlier. I'm usually in bed by the 4th quarter of the NBC game.

NFL won't move a team to Europe until jetliners fly much, much faster than they do now.

The story is just a link to a mayor saying what he hopes happens.

A couple games a year in London is enough, no need for a time to be there all the time when there are more deserving North American cities.

Ugh. When I lived on the west coast and followed my Vikings those 10 AM games were TOUGH! It is really hard to get the proper buzz on that early in the morning.

I can't tell you how many of those games I still remembered the next day. And as a Viking fan more often than not you want to be just a little fuzzy on Monday about what you watched happen on Sunday.
