Seems strange to wait this long to make a decision given this is not the first shoulder injury

You'd think that the appropriate tests would have been done multiple times by now.

He's exactly right. If you're trading for someone in his last year of his contract, you make sure you've got an extension already wrapped up before you trade for him. Instead, the Eagles got a player in his contract year and, in turn, it costed the Eagles $13M against their cap. If they had just a bit more in cap room that would've been created with an extension, they would've been able to keep Jeremy Maclin. That's important because they then wouldn't have needed to pick Nelson Agholor with their first rounder last year. Instead, they could've selected a guard like Laken Tomlinson (who was taken eight slots later) to replace Todd Herremans whom they released in 2015. In addition, they should've also just kept Evan Mathis for one more year. If they did that, they would've created some stability along their o-line, which would've consisted of a nice blend of veteran and young players.

And, oh yeah. They also gave up this year's second rounder, which also could've been used on another interior lineman to replace Mathis. Under this scenario, Philly would've been able to cut Jason Peters and his bloated $9M cap figure, move Lane Johnson who's making LT money to LT and feature a line consisting of two youngsters at guard and at RT and young vet a center. Now, they're hanging on to broken down Jason Peters and currently have garbage at their guard spots.
