The problem with Zunino is the Mariners literally have no other viable options and the free agent market is bare. It's like Jack drafted Zunino and was like fuck, we don't need to get another one. They've drafted middle infielder after middle infielder even after drafting Ackley so I don't get why there wasn't an option B or even developing an option B.

Since everything M's are doing has been out of the box (hiring a GM who quit and a manager who has never managed), why not do so in a trade as well. Yes this outside the box thinking, but why not?

The Seager's need to play together, period! So since Dodgers won't trade theirs, we trade ours.

Seager
Smith
Wilhelmsen
Zunino
Choi

for

Puig
Turner
Baez
Grandal
Urias

Go for Jerry!

From Sports Daily:

Mariners

Desmond — Seattle's experiment with young players at shortstop needs to end. That's not to say those players (in particular, Brad Miller, Chris Taylor and Ketel Marte) can't become solid big leaguers, but the Mariners are in win-now mode and Desmond can help them do that.

You mean like how he did with the Nats who had way more talent? Pass.

I actually think with a few smart moves they are closer to win now than a rebuild. Yes, I said that. The time is now with the vets and major contracts we have right now we have to go for it. No choice as I see it.

In his short time with the Red Sox, newly-minted Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto turned in a detailed report on the Sox organization from top to bottom, according to Red Sox top exec Dave Dombrowski. With that kind of intimate knowledge of the Sox, Cafardo speculates that it would make sense to watch for Mariners/Red Sox trade talks.

-----------------------

Interesting. They have the outfield depth we could use and a lot of minor league talent. Just no Fat Panda or Risky Ramirez.

I have always thought since last year we would go after Bradley Jr. from Boston. Just seemed like a good fit for us and they have extra OF's and he is expendable.

We have the worst farm in the American League, and major deficiencies in the outfield and entire pitching staff.

The team is a whole lot of moves away from a winning record, much less a run at a pennant or WC spot.

June (draft) and July (trade deadline) are all I care about in 2016. We'll see where the priorities are for the team right there, and that'll be the first time we get to really appraise what kind of GM Dipoto will be for this club.

He already took out the trash with the 6 player trade, so I'm optimistic.

If the team manages to get to .500 this year or contend with the proper focus being on farm building and acquiring trade pieces, I'll be as happy as anybody, though.

Because our farm is the worst, it would take a lot to get it where it needs to be to be valued. It would take several years and several perfect trades and as we all know hitting on prospects is like hitting the lottery and we would have to hit the lottery several times for it to work. That is why I think we are closer to competing than rebuilding.

Yeah, it'll take a couple of years at the very least.

Without a $180 million payroll, not even the best GM and most competent front office in MLB history could get this team to where it could contend anytime soon.

I fully acknowledge I could be wrong. I'm just jaded, I guess.

I usually am as well, but I really think with a few smart moves we could compete this year. Dump Kuma, Trumbo, and Smith's contracts and we could spend. Need to have payroll between $150M-$160M to get it done though.

Guti - Keep this guy around. He can still patrol the OF which we desperately need. He has also shown a resurgence with the bat, especially opposite field power in the very limited time he's been up. If he can stay healthy he's a quality tool for a team.
