Cam Newton's new 5-year, $103.8 million deal also includes $60 million guaranteed, per source.

Much smaller than I would have guessed. Cam's agent is probably getting some nasty phone calls right now.

It is really going to set up a contentious showdown IMO between Wilson & Seattle and Luck & Indy. Both teams will point to this deal and both agents will likely point to the sky with their middle finger.

Well like I said in another thread Schneider of the Seahawks has another agent to call and tell them thanks for costing me money. With the Cap going up like crazy and mediocre QB's getting the $20 million a year mark it should be no surprise that Cam got this.

Cam is worth so much more than this though in this league. I am shocked they took it.

Not only is Cam a solid QB, he's young and he is EXTREMELY marketable. Hell Cam might be the most marketable guy out of the 3 young guns up for deals.

I agree and he probably could have gotten more and I would guess both Wilson and Luck will definitely get more but this is about where I expected. I will have to see the details of the contract as most likely it is more like a 3-year/$60 million type contract so he has room to show he is worth so much more.

Cam contract includes $22.5M signing bonus, $7.5M roster bonus due June 6, and $1M salary this season, paying Newton $31 million this year.

I suppose if I was an agent and I had a QB who played as recklessly and physical as Cam, I probably would want to ink him before the coming season too I guess. Even if it meant not maximizing out the dollars.

The fact that Cam has already started showing signs of breaking down definitely would encourage me to want to sign a contract even if it is a few dollars shorter than what I could get if I had another great season. I still think it is a pretty fair contract. Again though the truth is in the little details. There is no knowing right now what incentives were built in or what protections for the team or how much of that guaranteed money is actually guaranteed.

I would say so. Looking at other QB contracts over the last few years that $20 million a year is about the spot for good but not elite QB's.

I actually just did the math. Maybe not as bad off as I thought.

Scheduled to make:
2015: $14.5M
2016: $19 M (likely the tag value)
2017: $23 M (again the tag value)

So he was at $56.5M over 3. Keep that top tag value on for two more seasons as the discount you are offering the team in exchange for guarantees and it is $102.5M over 5.

A guy like Cam should be earning close to that $23M per but when you factor in he was already locked in the next two years at a discounted rate, this does actually get to that level.

Cam Newton has the skills to be a $100M QB. He just has to bring it all together. My question is whether Gettleman is able to surround Newton with players for the Panthers to be successful.

Again its all about the posters personal axe to grind. Whether this was a team or player friendly deal. IF your narrative is SEattles going to go broke with wilson then this was a great deal for Cam, if you are a fan of Romo, this is a bad deal for the panthers. and your qbs is better.
