Last week UCLA put up 646 yards of total offense on the Mighty Owls of Rice, which included 303 yards through the air and an impressive 343 yards on the ground, leaving the Bruins ranked 3rd overall after week 1 in total Offense.
The numbers look astounding........they look great. But can UCLA put up these kinds of numbers on an actual College Football team? That remains to be seen.
Fact is, while the Bruins did indeed bust off long play after long play on a Defense made of air, they only managed to convert on 2 out of 11 attempts on 3rd down. Yes that is correct, when put in the position where they actually needed to make a play, the Bruins converted a mere 18.2% on 3rd down........against the Mighty Owls of Rice. UCLA ranks 118th in the country after week 1 in 3rd down conversions made....
Let's take a look at penalties. UCLA had 8 penalties for 107 total yards, averaging 13.3 yards per penalty, and ranking them 124th in the country out of 124 teams in penalties for yards.......
How about the Defense? UCLA gave up a total of 358 yards, including 184 yards through the air, and 174 yards on the ground.....to the Mighty Owls of Rice........24 points.........to THEE MIGHTY.......OWLS............OF RICE.
Rice returned 5 starters from their outstanding Offense from a year ago which managed to pile up 224 total yards of Offense and 9 total points on the Texas Longhorns last season........just to use as a comparison. Yes 5 whole starters returned from that wrecking crew........the 111th fewest returning starters of any team in the country. Rice is clearly a powerhouse.
Luckily, the Bruins were playing against a bucket of turds on the other side of the ball, or these penalties and missed conversions would have actually hurt their chances of winning.
Nebraska ranks #1 in the country on 3rd down conversions, and committed a total of 2 penalties in week 1. The Huskers punted 1 time.
This has been a Newsflash........with JJM
