Latest NHL radical realignment plan breaks up Southeast Div. - Puck Daddy - NHLBlog - Yahoo! Sports

Not bad. I actually like this. Breaks up the SouthEast, but...it's not like there are really big rivalries in that division. Puts Washington up with some of their bigger rivals as well.

my only complaint is that Winnipeg is the only CDN team in its division.
It's still an improvement coming from the Southeast, but that's a disappointment for them.

I don't like it. I've said it before I don't understand why one team moving makes the people at the top of the NHL think that the current division setup needs a complete overhaul. Who thinks that way? The Nashville to the SE, Winnipeg to the NW, Dallas to the Central, Colorado to the Pacific works great. Makes too much sense I guess.

I understand that. It seems like it's either going to be a complete overhaul or the easy Det/Wpg swap. BUT, a complete overhaul may not be a bad idea. Shuffling and creating new rivalries...considering that the NHL seems to be gaining new fans, a new look may not be a bad idea. That said, I'm not sure this one will pass because Detroit stays West and others may not like it. But, it makes sense geographically, has the same numbers in the divisions, and would open the doors to more "big" games inter-division. Of course I'm likely biased because my team would be in a great division.

That raises a good point though...is it worth a big realignment if there's a distinct possibility that Quebec gets a team? Because when I look at this plan I don't see an easy fix for moving PHX.

I think that ship has sailed. Phoenix is staying around until Glendale stops ponying up $25m per year (they have said this is the last year of subsidies).
only shot is if an owner willing to eat those losses is found. good luck with that.

too bad, because the Glendale sports complex it really a nice area, but it is in butt-fuck nowhere.

Although, with the Wang getting fucked on LI on a almost monthly basis, shouldnt they also be considered a threat to move? I know the owner wants them to stay on LI, but it seems like LI doesnt want them sadly.

Chuck will hopefully move the team to Queens. Brooklyn is a possibility as well. I hate politicians.

No, it doesn't really make sense geographically. Miami and Montreal are separated by 2267 km (1400+ miles). Ottawa to Miami is the same distance. Toronto is similar.

It's like they started making that division and then just said "...fuck it. Let's throw some FLA teams in there because Canadian fans will show up anyway!"

If you are going to go the 4 division route you should swap out the Bolts and Panthers for the two NY teams.

The whole thing sucks, IMO, anyway. Uneven conferences/divisions? Stupid.

Stupid with 6 5 team divisions and the current playoff format.

Winnipeg goes to the NW, Minny to the Central and Nashville to the SE. None of those teams have established rivalries that will be disrupted and it makes some sense geographically.

I don't like Columbus not being in the East with Buffalo, Pitt and Toronto (Geographic rivalries).

But I LOVE Detroit not being in the East with teams they will mop up for easy points.

I'm conflicted.
