So I am in the market for a “new” car. I am looking to spend in the neighborhood of about 40k (less would be great, but I am budgeting myself upwards of 50k for the perfect match).

I am currently looking at a 4Runner SR5 with a MSRP of about 42k and a Tesla 3, also with a price of approximately 42k. I am looking at a Kia Sportage hybrid as a fallback at about 30k. I love SUVs due to their driving height and space, but the luxury that the Tesla offers at the same price point can’t be dismissed.

I am open to going “super cheap” and buying used, but my limited research into the market has shown me that buying new right now just makes a lot more sense. Argue this point and convince me I am wrong. My findings don’t jive with my lifelong stance of “new is dumb”. What am I missing?

What good SUV am I missing? I have looked at Ford, Nissan, Kia, LandRover, Rivian…. None seem to live in this price point with a good looking SUV (I prefer the SUV…. I am not looking sedan unless it knocks me over like the Tesla)

I just purchased a used Audi SQ5 for my wife. She loves it. It’s in great condition. We got a warranty. No reason to buy new.

I bought my last new car in 2018. It's a VW Jetta. It cost about 18K as I recall. It's a boring sedan, but it's really all I want.

So why are new cars pushing 40K now? Honestly, I'd rathar have my CD player than pay a monthly subscription fee for satellite radio and listen to some blabbering announcer. I've got a backup camera and bluetooth for my phone.

Get the best of both worlds....

R2s should start hitting the ground end of this year if you can wait that long. Price point of 45-55k minus tax incentives. Comparable size to a 4Runner.

I decided on a Tesla 3. Just waiting on delivery at this point. Hopefully this weekend.

I absolutely loved my Hyundai Palisade. Best car I've ever owned. But I totaled it during the chip shortage a few years ago and couldn't get a new one at that time. Went with a smaller Mazda CX-5 iturbo t drove so nice, really a great car, but I just hated it because I compared everything to the Palisade I wanted and other than it's driving aggressively everything was just worse. Was just gonna go back to a Palisade at Christmas, but they offered me such a good deal on a Mazda CX-70 that I couldn't say no. It blows the cx5 out of the water, everything is better. The electronics and user interface aren't as nice as my 5 year old Palisade still, but I'm happy with everything else.

Wife has a Kia Telluride which is basically the exact same thing as the Palisade. Can confirm it is great.

Unrelated - but in a rented Nissan Armada right now and that thing is a giant pile of shit. Avoid at all costs.

I have a 2022 Palisade with the 4 captains chairs and love it. I bought it exclusively to go on trips, pick up my grandbabies from day care and to haul my 3 buddies to go golfing. Funny side note. I only live 10 minutes from the Hyundai dealer so I came home during the test drive to see how well my full set of clubs fit in the storage area. The look I got from the salesman was priceless.
