I did NOT go out of my way to "invent" penalties on Lindros — or any player — but I wasn't going to give that guy a break on anything borderline that I might have let slide with a player who had gained acceptability with me.
You think he's changed
Keep in mind this was not too long after the trade with Quebec and his father played a very large, very public role in that. Given the context (and given the fact that Stewart was a bit of a dick himself), is it a surprise that Lindros took "Hey Eric, how's your dad?" as a barb rather than friendly banter?
I mean, for all intents and purposes Lindros seemed to be an asshole (although he once signed an autograph for me at a gas station and seemed friendly to my 12-year-old self), but given that the entire hockey world was well aware of Carl's meddling in his son's career to that point I don't think it was totally off base for Lindros to think Stewart was just trying to be a dick and get a laugh out of Stevens/Nicholls.
I feel like there's something missing from the story about the posters.
He dumped a water bottle full of piss on my buddy as a "prank" the summer before he was drafted (summer of 1990) so I know he could certainly be a prick as a young man. But it still feels like there's some detail missing from the Stewart story (note that I'm not saying that detail would entirely justify what he did).

It's not Eric's stats that are keeping him out of the HHOF, it's these character issues that continue to dog him. It took Dino Ciccarelli some time to get inducted into the Hall, I think Lindros will get there eventually as well.
I've heard a "piss bottle" story from basically every hockey player I knew growing up with. Hell, our high school hockey team was cancelled one year after some kid pissed on another one, and that isn't even close to the worst locker room story i've heard. I'm sure many of the stars have done much, much worse.
With all the players that Philly gave up to get him, if Lindros had stayed with Quebec/Colorado, then it might have been the Flyers who had won the cup.Lindros probably lies awake every night wishing he had never wanted out of Quebec.
Thanks ERIC!!!
That's a good point actually. What innocent reason would there be for Stewart to ask Eric about his dad? It's not like him and Carl were old friends, were they?
Agree. And I wouldn't hold a 19 year old kid responsible for every poor comment or stupid act he did or didn't do in a fit of anger. Plus, this story our after decades have gone by is a bit of a stretch. I can't even remember what I was mad about last week. But, I know I was right!that was my first thought as well. Sounds like Saint Paul was doing a little baiting
And excellent points by Mottola and BBB on this as well.
Overall, not much of a story IMO, and reflects on Stewart as poorly as it does on Eric Lindros.
