I did NOT go out of my way to "invent" penalties on Lindros — or any player — but I wasn't going to give that guy a break on anything borderline that I might have let slide with a player who had gained acceptability with me.

nice to hear this honesty. we all know it. Im not sure Many of us REALLY believe they make up penalties cause they dislike someone but they sure go out of there way to be diligent on individual players.

I feel like there's something missing from the story about the posters.

He dumped a water bottle full of piss on my buddy as a "prank" the summer before he was drafted (summer of 1990) so I know he could certainly be a prick as a young man. But it still feels like there's some detail missing from the Stewart story (note that I'm not saying that detail would entirely justify what he did).

It's not Eric's stats that are keeping him out of the HHOF, it's these character issues that continue to dog him. It took Dino Ciccarelli some time to get inducted into the Hall, I think Lindros will get there eventually as well.

I've heard of/had a lot of good and decent interactions with Eric since that piss bottle incident when he was 17. He's definitely changed.

Keep in mind this was not too long after the trade with Quebec and his father played a very large, very public role in that. Given the context (and given the fact that Stewart was a bit of a dick himself), is it a surprise that Lindros took "Hey Eric, how's your dad?" as a barb rather than friendly banter?

I mean, for all intents and purposes Lindros seemed to be an asshole (although he once signed an autograph for me at a gas station and seemed friendly to my 12-year-old self), but given that the entire hockey world was well aware of Carl's meddling in his son's career to that point I don't think it was totally off base for Lindros to think Stewart was just trying to be a dick and get a laugh out of Stevens/Nicholls.

That's a good point actually. What innocent reason would there be for Stewart to ask Eric about his dad? It's not like him and Carl were old friends, were they?

This wasn't a team though, this was while working at a hockey school (and of course Eric received no punishment for it). That's a little different situation I think. It's definitely a dick move in a professional environment.

I am a little disappointed by Paul Stewart here. Maybe Eric was a dick, and maybe Eric thought he was defending himself.

But for a long tenured and well respected official to admit that he called certain things different based on his personal opinion of the player is disgusting. How true it is doesn't matter, saying it is something that just shouldn't happen. I'm sure all current refs really appreciate that being thrown out there.

To me, he's being a dick as well.

With all the players that Philly gave up to get him, if Lindros had stayed with Quebec/Colorado, then it might have been the Flyers who had won the cup.

So, a heartfelt thanks to Eric for that.

Overall, not much of a story IMO, and reflects on Stewart as poorly as it does on Eric Lindros.

Agree. And I wouldn't hold a 19 year old kid responsible for every poor comment or stupid act he did or didn't do in a fit of anger. Plus, this story our after decades have gone by is a bit of a stretch. I can't even remember what I was mad about last week. But, I know I was right!
