Pirates Interested In Ramon Santiago: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

The link says it all.

I guess about 2 mill can land him for sure, he made like 1.3 the last two years.

2009 oWar .5 dWar .6
2010 oWar 1.2 dWar 1.4
2011 oWar .6 dWar .7

another insurance policy move/dumpster dive

Sign him for 2 and we have about 14mill left to spend this offseason assuming we dont get rid of anyone else.

I'm really liking our chances at the number one draft pick in 2013.

Extremely similar player to Cedeno, would rather get an upgrade.

I hope they get an upgrade. I agree he is similar to Cedeno but more fitted for a utility role and they can get cheaper for that role (Jose Harrison and Ciriaco?)

Wonder if they bring him in d'Arnaud gets a look at the everyday SS?

Finally if the plan is to have him play everyday SS then just bring back Cedeno.

Hmmm..... we're getting older without getting better:

- Barajas is older than both Doumit and Snyder (but not better).

- Santiago is older than Cedeno (but not better).

Wonder if that pattern will continue at starting pitcher? Will the guy NH acquires be older than Maholm but not better? I'm betting the answer to these questions will be "yes."

Signed Jake Fox, either going to be a good replacement for Pearce or another AAA filler in Clement. His defense is brutal but his hits lefties very well.

I know nothing about Sharion Martis but looks to be lefthanded bullpen filler (throwing crap at the wall hoping it sticks)

NH is interested in Aaron Cook.....God I hope not!

He also stated he McCutchen is not untouchable. I don't have a problem with him stating that because in reality no player should be but I don't see enough value they could get in return?

McCutchen and other Pirate outfielders

I thought the front office stated that McCutchen essentially IS untouchable.

Apparently, Keith Law at ESPN stated that the Pirates were listening to offers for McCutchen..... but a high-ranking team source has indicated that the Pirates have NOT entertained trade offers for McCutchen and have no intention of doing so.

Source: Pirates not trading CF McCutchen - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

At the bottom of this short article, it also states that Xavier Paul has been released. That seems a bit strange. Paul is no star, but he's a useful reserve outfielder. Seems likely that this increases the possibility that Jones will be tendered..... and opens up the possibility of Gorkys making the team out of Spring Training.

I read that from the trib also last night after posting that. I am not sure where Law is getting this information but he is laughable anymore.

As for Paul I am surprised also he got released, that does point to Gorkys probably going to be one of the 5 OF's and they did give Jake Fox and Brandon Boggs ST invites. I guess they find those two more valuable? Then for Jones he is more valuable due to the 1B possibility.

xavier paul is not a major league quality outfielder. his release has no bearing on anything else that we decide to do with the roster.

I also don't see any reason to think that McC would be traded. There's no way we could get enough value back to make it worthwhile.
Also - if the Pirates did get rid of McC it would be a really bad black mark against ownership. You can blame Bonds for being Bonds and you can blame DL for getting rid of Ramirez too early but if McC moves on early then it would make us 3 for 3 in getting rid of our homegrown superstars. If the Nuts aren't willing to pay McC now then it would be very difficult to make a case that the Pirates will ever be competitive under this ownership group.

So true. It is already a pretty weak and if they would deal him any hope would be gone.

Honestly I don't see any value they could ever get back for him because no team would be willing to give up that much. With his current contract and his value to the Pirates is there truely a more valuable player to his team at their given contract rate? I don't think there is.

Yea, I'm sure they are willing to listen, but it would take so much most teams couldn't even make a competetive offer.

Was never a fan of Paul, he was redundant with all the speedy OF's on the team. Maybe they are making room for a rule V draftee? I don't see Gorkys making the team out of spring training.

My only thought with Gorkys is that it is a 5th OF on the Pirates and why spend on that, go as cheap as possible. I would really like to see Tabata, McCutchen and Pressley play the majority of the games (assumed health). Not sure a rule V would equal his value unless they don't want to loose options on him? The only value I can see in a rule V for this team is a relief pitcher after what's his name failed last year.
