Since when do we draft for our immediate need? Of guys drafted during the Marvin Lewis era, only three have started their first season -- Gresham, Rivers and Green. Eifert and Hall played a lot early and J-Joe played a lot late in the season. That's not immediate impact. Tackle is a big need now and in the future.
Plus, we are one injury away from a guy who is a year removed from injury and the other that is just coming off injury. Both tackles have been hurt recently, both have their contract end at the end of next year, and I don't want to be having to draft a OT next year out of need because we lost, say Whitworth, and the OT position is not that deep of a class next year. This year it is deep in the first, and while teams need offensive tackles this year, it doesn't seem to be as heavy 1st round wants or needs as other years.
This is the perfect year to get one, groom him, and have him as an insurance policy in case we have one of our bookends get hurt again. Flowers at 21 would be a steal in my opinion.
I still shored up DT and LB in my mock draft with what I feel are quality guys at the position, especially since none of them will be starting year one anyways. You can bank that no matter what, Atkins and Peko are the starters. Anyone drafted at DT by the Bengals this year, whether it be their 1st pick or their last pick, they will be a backup / rotational player even if one of Atkins/Peko/Thompson were to get hurt, because they will also rotate Hunt, and Gilberry inside on rushing downs from time to time as well.
