...but didn't necessarily like when you first heard it.

I'll start...

For years I just couldn't get into this one (20+ minutes might have been one reason); however, years later, I just love this piece. It doesn't feature the classic Metheny solos/improv/melodies, but it's really evocative and somewhat trippy without having just a hippy feel to it.

Mostly jazz from the big band era...and old blues that the originators did back in the early 1900's thru the depression era.

I also appreciate classical music, symphony orchestra, and some opera much more than I did years ago.

I've been listening to jazz since I was about 5 years old. My dad had Shelly Mann and Andre Previn's jazz version record of My Fair Lady that I'd listen to constantly (as well as some other stuff). As a youngster (age 6-13), I couldn't even sit through "music class" in school as I found it incredibly boring. As a result, I also slept through a lot of valuable info that I wish I could have applied at an earlier age.

I developed an interest in classical music at about age 16 after hearing ELP for the first time; it really opened my eyes and ears at the time.

I'm not huge on the blues (well, I love me some jazz blues for sure). That's not to say I don't like any of the regular blues; there's some great SRV, Jimmy Smith, Tony Monaco and John Mayall stuff out there.

Jazz, Classical, Bluegrass(ie; "real" country), Blues.. all in my 20s. It was all R&B, rock & pop until then. But I'm not an aficionado of any of those genres and jazz (40s - 60s bebop mostly) is the only one I regularly seek out currently.

I hated jazz until I was in my 40s.
I have a Miles Davis disc I love now and need to start listening to more... it's mostly '60s stuff and not his later fusion stuff.

When Prince first came out I was in my early teens, a metal head and hated him. As I got older I realized just what kind of musician he actually was. I never got all that into the music, but his talent was immense.

@SlinkyRedfoot's mom. Her Greatest Hits tape didn't match up to the Ava Taylor's and Bethany Benz's of the world, but when you dig more into the underground stuff (Cum on My Face Daddy 3 or Ass To Mouth 5) you really recognize that she's got talent.

Weirdly enough, I didn't like Prince much at first either. Granted, all I knew was "Purple Rain" (the song). This is one of my favorite songs of all time now.

Yeah, actually Slink showed me that one in February. I prefer the original, but that is great. The thing that strikes me about that video is honestly Jeff Lynne's vocals. Amazing.

I wasn't really into the garage rock revival in the early 00's but I've gone back and listened to a lot of bands from that era, and found that I like a lot of their stuff

Or as my generation knows him: the unseen white guy in Warren G's band. :dhd:

First time I'd ever seen McDonald perform on tv (as opposed to hearing him singing on the radio), I was floored that he wasnt a black dude...i pretty much assumed he was black my entire childhood lol. It was even later that I realized that he was a member in both Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers:lol:

A lot! I was a narrow minded metal head, and everything else was garbage when I was younger. Huh, go figure, it was not, at all. I'll start with:
