Browns announce Banner, Lombardi to step down - NFL.com

CEO Joe Banner and GM Mike Lombardi are going to step down.

This after they fired their HC after just one year.

And will probably draft yet another QB with their #1 pick (I think they've drafted 14 since coming back in 1999).

I think part of what's wrong with that franchise is they're always in a state of flux. Every other year or so they get a new QB/HC/GM/CEO/owner. They're just to unstable at the top.

So it's like they're in a constant rebuilding mode. They get part way through on what they were trying to do, then start over.

That has to suck for Browns fans.

If it wasn't for the FO and the chaos that they are in that would actually be a pretty good team to want to go to as a head coach. They have a pretty good defense with a lot of young talent. The OL is pretty darn good. They have a good receiver and TE for a quarterback to do well with. They just need a few more pieces on the field to be a playoff type contender and have that chance with a ton of cap space plus a nice arsenal of draft picks to really get this team moving forward. Too bad the FO most likely screws this up once again ruining any chance of Browns fans having anything good to cheer about.

Remember a few years ago when they got like 5 draft picks so Atlanta could move up and get Julio Jones?

They got Jabaal Sheard, Gregg Little, Owen Marecic in 2011, then Brandon Weeden and James - Micheal Johnson in 2012.

It's fair to say they didn't take full advantage of those picks.

I agree they didn't which is why even with all those draft picks they are still a bottom dweller in the NFL. What they do this off season will determine the next few years for them of whether they can actually get out of the cellar or not but with the FO always turning over it is hard to get things going. Usually with this kind of turnover it means that draft day is chaotic as there isn't an established way of going about making the picks. Do you listen to the scouts that were a part of the old regime on who to take or do you do your own scouting and just make your own decisions knowing you have missed the whole season?

Browns are starting to make the Raiders look like a well run organization.

Each new person that comes in is going to want to do things 'his' way, and that usually means tearing stuff down and starting from square one.

To me, since coming back into the league, Cleveland has lacked vision. They don't know who they want to be. Do they want to be a run team first, or a passing team first or built on defense?

In Pittsburgh you know who we are. We're defense. We hire our coaches to fit us. We don't hire a guy that's going to want to retool and rebuild. You come in, as a draft pick, to a stable organization. You know we're going to run the 3-4, you know we're going to blitz, you know we're going to run, you know who the HC/GM/owner is going to be...etc.

Same with the Pats. They're a passing club, BB is going to be the HC, Brady is going to be the QB, Kraft is going to be the owner, etc. Stability.

Most clubs in the NFL know who they are, so these are just 2 of many examples.

You build around who you are and stay the course. It's what works for you. It's about the long haul, not the short term and when you've got it working, you stick to it.

The Browns just lack a sense of themselves, and have for a while.

Agreed. The previous Browns team now has 2 rings. Man it's gotta be painful to be a Browns fan. I thought my team was disappointing.

Yeah I agree. I look at them for this upcoming draft being only a few months away and having to bring in a new FO pretty much to learn what most teams get a year to learn. Now my guess is they left the scouts in place but what they were scouting for was players that fit the old regime's thoughts not the new regime and head coach.

Now if I were the Browns right now as a head coach I would say to the FO guys to tell the scouts this is the exact offense and defense we are going to run and these are the positions and type of players we need to make this work. Go and find me those players and then come back and show me why this player fits and when we should be looking at them in the draft. Try to shorten the process as much as possible and have 5-10 players ranked 1-10 that you think will be available at certain picks and then take the top 1 or 2 player that is still left when you pick depending on which positions have already been filled and how much drop off their is from each ranking.

Getting rid of Lombardi is a good move. Hiring him in the first place was the mistake.

Hiring him was a mistake, I've never thought much of him. Maybe he was hired because someone thinks him related to Vince? (Which he's not).

That being said, it's yet more rebuilding for Cleveland.

I'm not as concerned with the front office moves as I was with the HC moves. In fact, this might be at least a partial reaction to the prolonged HC search process they just went through.

I'm satisfied with the HC they landed and they are in good position in the draft so long as they don't do anything stupid with those picks.

Manziel will change it all this season...

Vomit.

Hopefully, Houston takes him off the board so the Browns don't even have to worry about entertaining that thought.
