they had not timeouts. he couldn't take a sack, and couldn't complete a pass in the middle of the field. he had to force a ball to the sidelines..

The only chance KC had was to get a catch and go out of bounds. Considering they were far enough on SD's side, taking ANY chance to get that reception out of bounds even if it results in an interception is worth taking.

Hence it was a fine risk and fine interception. They lost nothing. Had only to gain.
