MLB is having some problems

There are 3 or 4 things going on. The two big ones are:

1) MLB isnt getting the younger crowd. Not the only sport hit with this problem but baseball fans are more likely to 'die off' than any other major sport.

2) Tanking wins championships. More than any other sport.

I suspect this trend will continue.

I think this is a result of being spoiled by the steroid era. People enjoy watching homeruns and seeing points put on the board. We like doubles and triples and not sacrifice outs for points or double plays. We need to have a league where there are big time hitters we need more Stantons and Judges that consistently hit 45-50 homers. The 1998 season where Mcgwire hit 70 homers and Sosa hit 66 homers and everyone else was hitting 40-50 homers. Back when 30 homers was average, but today you hit 30 and you will hit clean up in a lot of teams.

I think it's more a question of what is valued. And the home run has been deemed more valuable than stringing three hits together.

So, a guy like Freddy Galvis is willing to give up 20 points on his batting average to swing for solo homers, where 25 years ago he'd be getting coached to slap ground balls around the infield.

I do not fall into the "Crash" Davis school of though....

I actually like strikeouts when it's my pitcher getting them and when its an Astro striking out it ticks me off more than a weak fly ball or ground out.

either way it's more exciting. But, that's just my opinion.

I prefer a strike out to a FPOM. At least you are pulling pitches out of the pitcher.

And if there is a runner on 1st, at least you are avoiding the GIDP

I think the one issue with tanking in the NFL is that QBs on rookie contracts can be really valuable but there isn't any evidence to back your claim. At all.

The Eagles never tanked and certainly the Patriots never tanked. The Falcons didn't tank unless you're counting when they got Matt Ryan ten years ago which IIRC was a product of Vick not working out more than anything. The Broncos had an old man Peyton Manning added as a FA and Elway completely reworking the team once he got old and they got 2 Super Bowl appearances without ever tanking with completely different types of teams. Maybe the Panthers tanked one year when they got Cam Newton but Cam Newton being an MVP was more of a product of small sample sizes as far as I can tell. Seahawks didn't tank to get Russell Wilson or most of the best pieces on their Super Bowl defense.

The two most recent hardcore tanks in the NFL were the Titans and the Browns. The Lions tanked for awhile back in the day and the Rams did as well. The Titans have the only playoff win of the bunch and it took about a dozen flukes to happen.

Tanking in the NFL is stupid there are so many cases like Clayton said where teams didnt tank but still have winnings seasons. I am all for tearing down and rebuilding a new culture but tanking isnt necessary and the colts tanking for luck serves them right for the mess they are in right now.

The only sport where tanking makes the most sense is the NBA only because nobody cares about making the playoffs unlike football and baseball. As you can see by the Toronto rapters they had the most wins in the eastern conference but everyone knew they werent going to win any championships and they fired their head coach as of result for losing against lebron james

I think tanking in MLB is a crapshoot. The Mets or the Phils can do it because they have a media base that can get fans back when the rebuilds are successful. Houston pulled it off.

But tanking is a lot tougher to recover from in places like Pitt or Cincy where once you lose fans, it takes longer to get them back. Cincy has a bitter fan base now and it will take a lot of winning to fill up that park. The problem is, good teams are dismantled every 3 years and they they have to start over again.

It is very hard to sell "give this a couple of years" and learn your top pitcher just blew out his elbow and Jason Marquis was signed to pitch in his place.

Tanking is stupid.
