not sure about that... just because they are both great players... if they are going to hurt the team because of where they are in the lineup, they are still hurting the team...

Go read the Bill James bible about what he says about the 2 spot

I know sabre metrics says the 2 spot is where you put your best hitter... But there are huge holes with the logic... also, with a team of greats, you really should maximize your best players greatness...

Yeah I just don't agree. Alomar is the second worst hitter on my team why should he get the most ABs?

Why bat Arod 2nd when he has more strikeouts than Alomar and Gwynn combined? Alomar's AVG and OBP are very similar to Arods. Alomar is more of a stolen base threat and you'd have a lefty batting 2nd which I think is a +

Because A-Rod is twice the hitter Alomar is

yes, but if you want MORE men on base for your big boppers, the ones that you put in your lineup to be your big boppers... and if you want men in scoring position for those players... you are better off not with AROD...

Twice the hitter, in home runs yes but since when do we put players with 600 home runs in the 2 spot?

When Gherig and Mantle are hitting third and fourth. And I could argue that the conventional wisdom is wrong anyways

Just sharing my opinions but I dont want a guy with 2000+ strikeouts batting in front of Gehrig and Mantle.

Just because Bill James says it doesn't make it right. I'd agree with Milk, there are huge holes in the logic. I coach HS ball, which is light years from MLB, but I can tell you I would take Gwynn all day every day at 2 hole over ARod. First reason, do you really want ARod bunting the baseball? Trying to a ground ball right side to advance the runner? Working the count so that the leadoff can steal instead of teeing off on the first good fastball he can handle? Hit and run instead of picking a pitch he can drive? If you put Gwynn in the two hole, his natural approach is to work the pitcher, you don't have to bunt him to advance the runner because he never struck out, and instead of hitting the ball oppo to advance the runner, he can drive the ball with power to pull side as a lefty. Early in his career when he was fast, I'd say Gwynn, Speaker, and Ichiro would be perfect. Leave ARod at 3 or 4:2cents:
