There are a couple of factors which jump out in defense of the MLB: the strength of the MLBPA during those years and the rudimentary at best nature of testing at the time. To be honest, testing is still ineffective, because the developers of steroids are always one step ahead of the tests, and they always will be.

Perhaps they weren't proactive enough, and perhaps that was intentional, but at the same time, I'm not sure their efforts would have gotten them very far anyway.

MrMojo I get where your coming from and I understand your argument, but if you really think the NFL is innocent and doesn't do the same because they have a testing system that "works" I think you are a bit delusional. Think about it like this, Roger Goddell wants player safety that is his highest priority. At the same time he is pushing for a longer NFL season which puts players at an even greater risk. You really don't think he'd do the same with PED's?

Apples and Oranges. Player safety and longer season has no correlation. The NFL does have a system that has caught and punished many players. I just do not see how this makes any sense at all.

i don't think MLB promoted steroid use, i just think they ignored the use of steroids in the game. Now the public has come out and said this needs to stop so MLB is stepping up and trying to get the cheating to stop. I have no problems with the suspension or how MLB is handling steroids in the game.

Yeah but if you aren't part of the solution you are part of the problem. All I am saying is the commisioner is as much at fault as the players. He seems to be acting all high and might when in essence he let it slide when they needed recover from adversity. If he would just come out and say he is as much at fault as the players then I would be cool with that.
