Those articles are both less than a month old ... my point was that Smith has been doing the same thing for a while, it shouldn't have taken this long for people to notice him. I follow rankings year round and I hadn't seen rated any higher than Rd 5 till recently.

I hear what your saying. The only reason smith wasn't super highly rated was because OHIO St had to play musical qbs for awhile... I think that the qb injuries hurt his stock. We Penn St fans know who he is. I disagree with you and Swat on one thing, Wr may be a top priority!!! We don't know that Maclin is staying. One Andy Reid needs a Wr and Maclin loved Reid. Also Riley Cooper blows. If we address qb and or safety and possibly LB in free agency WR becomes a pretty high priority.

Well yeah, if Maclin bolts then I don't disagree that WR becomes a "huge" priority ... Cooper certainly isn't worth what he's being paid, but he's not going anywhere and he takes up almost 5 mil in cap space in 2015. Then you have Matthews who's cap hit bumps up to 1.125 next season. That's a ton of cap space wrapped up at the WR position if Maclin is resigned.

We'd better get a CB and S in free agency. We're too close to be a legitimate competitor to have to wait for rookies learn how to play in the NFL. WR to me is a very high priority not to get another weapon either FA or the draft. I think Cooper gets relegated to a #4 or #5 WR. and he plays ST very well. Add another #2 WR to Mac, Mathews' make Huff the #4 - then we have a real good receiving corps. If we do not add a top #2, then we need to move Matthews outside, and move Ertz to the slot.

If we solve the secondary in FA, then we can draft the BPA (hopefully a QB or ILB).

I think we have to look at WR because there is no guarantee that Maclin will be an Eagle next year. If some team over spends he will be gone.

I agree with Old Duke....I think a CB and a Safety need to be brought in via free agency....maybe even two. Then one of each needs to be drafted both before rd 4. A team we need to Target is Denver.....Denver is Fucked.

Rahim Moore is a guy I'd sign and at ILB Mason Foster from Tampa is a guy I'd target if he shakes loose.

I think we need a corner and safety in free agency and then follow it up with a high draft pick for a corner. Remember Boykin only has a year left on his contract and he wants to be an outside corner. So,he won't resign here since chippy and company and probably rightly so don't see him as an outside corner.

Seattle's CB Byron Maxwell isn't a household name, but he's a guy I may be inclined to throw some big money at. With Sherman getting paid huge money, I don't think they can also pay UFA Maxwell. If we can get Iupati and Maxwell in free agency we'd be set going into the draft.

AGREED! However We better sign more than 2 free agents! I mean WTF we should be about 30 mill under the cap once we make our cuts....maybe more because the caps being increased again i believe.

Back to WR another WR i spoke about in the college thread that has first rd type talent that is flying a bit under the radar is Justin Hardy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aLPtrAluYU

watch the ODB catch at the 30 second mark...and the Heinz Ward knockout block around the 2:45 mark.

Absolutely! But you and 30 other teams want Maxwell too. I hope we do get both of these guys, and Maxwell first. We may get outbid by other teams though. We need 1 corner and 1 safety in free agency, even if we can't get the top names, as long as who we do sign are above average players, and can help stop the bleeding. Getting Iupati would be icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. I would be elated if we came away with these 3 positions filled. Then as I said before, we can get a QB and WR in the first 2 rounds, and take the BPA's.

I'm still very curious who Chip will hire as GM. That could be the key to this offseason. Someone who is adept at recognizing the best talent, and convincing Chip to make the decision to pull the trigger.

I expect that Chip having the power, will solve the defensive holes in free agency, so he can get his QB, and WR in the beginning of the draft.
I think they will go after flowers and maxwell, cut williams and fletcher, and possibly offer will allen a deal. No way chip mortgages another playoff run on bad or unproven corners. But to do that, cooper, and cole will need to be cut or traded. We still gotta bring back maclin and graham.

The more I watch of both Winston and mariotta, the worse I like them both. I still think petty has the highest upside per pick projection. Its still early but petty might be a late 3rd 4th rounder, but I love this kid and what he could do in chips system. When he is hot, there isnt a defense in college football that can contain him.

At CB u have to go after & sign Revis or Maxwell. Its almost a must.

At S, there will be even less options imo..might have to settle for A.Rolle as a stopgap.

Iupati or Wisniewski come into play imo IF we cant sign a big time CB. Onky so much money to go around.

We have a deep threat in Maclin. We need a reliable #2 WR.

I'd trace a 3 to Houston foR A. JohnsOn.

I'd also see what SF wants for Bold in or Crabtree.

Andre Johnson is about a year from retirement. If you traded a 3 for AJ you would be insane.

You don't trade good picks for guys like Boldin or Johnson. Maybe a 5th like the Sproles deal but that's it.

There are plenty of receivers in the draft as usual. I look there for another piece to the puzzle, or at unrestricted free agents. There is speculation that Arizona will cut Fitz, if you are set on a big name old guy past his prime.

Johnson is still damn good. He had 130+ yards in the last game. He just hasn't had a decent QB since Matt Schaub. Ok, maybe a 3 is high, but I'd get him. He'd be great in this offense and give us that 6'3" receiver that every team is now lobbing the ball up to and taking the interference penalty.

I didn't say a 3 for Boldin or Crabtree. But both would be an upgrade over Cooper and SF may be cutting salary for a rebuild.

Can't do everything in the draft so we need to be creative in FA and trades.

You can't cut Cooper until the 2016 season, it would be a 6.2 mil cap hit this year which is 1.4 mil more than if you keep him. Cooper still provides excellent blocking, so he's not completely useless for one more season.

Now Mike Wallace is running his mouth about Miami? A.P. Will be playing with a half-heart and Wallace is poison. I'm sure Wallace will find a way to blame Teddy Bridgewater for his own lack of production. Wallace's career is on the line in Minnesota, and he gets paid too much. He will make the Vikes as much better as he made the Fins...
