From Schefter on twitter.
SalPal reports Mike Patterson has brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation), a tangle of blood vessels in skull; requires surgery or radiation.
I'd guess this will be a career-ender for him. AVMs aren't something to mess around with. If he didn't suffer any permanent brain damage from his seizure, he should count himself lucky and retire to a healthy life.
So his agent says he's getting a 2nd opinion & isn't accepting the diagnosis just yet. he sounded like he thinks Patterson will play again this year. We'll see...
This couldn't have come at a worse time for the Eagles. I'll bet they wish they didn't trade Bunkley now. Losing Patterson negates a HUGE portion of the gains they've made on defense. Without him they're pretty weak up the middle.
What I read led me to believe that he will be at practice, but just to watch and support his teammates. But if he is (not completely sure he isn't) participating in drills and able to play come week 1, he is extremely lucky.
AVM's in itself is still under a lot of research. Most times people are asymptomatic. In Patterson's case, he actually collapsed which is concerning. I guess his physician must have felt his AVM was small enough to not warrant anything.
So is Patterson back in action or expected to be any time soon? I can't find an update.
Everyone is talking about how great the Eagles are now, but losing this guy is probably bigger than gaining Jason Babin. Bunkley & Jenkins are probably a wash at this point.
