Both of these guys are free agents at the end of the season.

Mike Green is 26 and will be an RFA. He played in only 49 games last season but had a relatively full season (75 games) the year before. He is currently making 5.25 million.

Dennis Wideman is 28 and has been relatively healthy (sans last postseason). he currently makes just below 4 million per year and will be a UFA.

The Caps are going to re-sign Carlson for sure. I think they will make a big play for one of the two above as well. Which would you sign. The upside is probably higher for Green, but Wideman would be a safer bet. You could get compensation for Green, also.

I love Mike Green, but Wideman may be the best bet.

I wonder if Lowebellini would consider an offer sheet for Mike Green...He could certainly help their backend and that's where they need the most help.

I agree, however I would put a cap on what I would pay for him. If the market is insane, I am not going to break the bank off of his best season to date. Cap it at 5.5ish and offer him longevity. I don't want to get in a bidding war for him.

Something to think about is they have quite a bit of money coming off the cap this season if semin, knuble (think he retires) and Vokoun all leave, not to mention wideman and green already make quite a bit so they aren't getting that big of a raise. As far as resigning Carlson, I imagine something close to what alzner got, but maybe a bit higher because hes had another year under his belt.

They could resign them both, but they might go get a forward instead, either way a little early to think about it

That's why the plan is to resign him before July 1.

Agreed. I also hope that we give the Backstrom treatment to both Carlson and Alzner and wrap them up long term. Make thomas two guys, along with Ovie and Backstrom the nucleus going forward.

yes, they certainly could have used someone like Sheldon Souray in their line-up. oh, wait....

from an outsider's perspective, the Caps seem like a different team with Green in the line-up.
Wideman just seems more replaceable.

They've learned to play without him, early on in the year I would've agreed, but this past time he was out there, although it was only 3 games with limited ice time, he was just another defenseman out there.

You should trade Ovechkin to the Bruins.

Although... off topic and sorry... I really hope we can hold on to Tuukka till TT retires. Rask would make almost any team in the East better in goal.

Edit: Imagine Tuukka in Philly or Washington. They'd be significantly better.

He's good, but he still has defensive lapses, just what you guys need right?

 -- he'd fit right in!

i haven't watched him much this season, i watched him a lot last season.. thought he was a pretty solid player

He is, but he is a little bit like younger Green. Great offensively, okay defensively. I think 5.5ish like 46+2 was saying is a bit high for him even after this year.
