When you put huge sums of money into elite level sport the individuals or teams at the top will concentrate on efficiency. The rules make passing more efficient than running so the league becomes pass happy. Nickel is the NFL's base defense because it's more efficient against current play than 4-3 or 3-4. The league is moving towards more Prevent style and Dime defense. None of this is new. If you played Madden 25 years ago you played Dime defense all the time.
