This is a fun question. Since he's loyal to a brand for 28 years feel it's a American brand. Guessing the number is tough. Is he a one vehicle guy, or does he like me, own a everyday driver and a pickup ? When young did he buy "affordable " because young folks tend not to have a lot money? If so then they probably got replaced often.
I tend to want to guess high, but if he's actually confident about the number of cars he's owned....then scale down the number. I like your guess, but went a little lower, because he seemed to actual know right off how many vehicles he owned.

not to add, the more cars he had the bigger the chances are that he had at least ONE lemon... which affects your math...
