You know what? By the reasons given for the other GMs above him, I dont really see a whole lot that places them ahead of them. Im not saying Mayhew needs to be higher but those other guys aren't very impressive either.

If Mayhew and company maintains a good team, good defense and improves on offense, Mayhew should be applauded for it, at least. I guarantee if the Lions make the playoffs again (wothout Suh), he will go to at least 15.

I think you have answered your question on why Mayhew shouldn't be higher. When a team has to "improve on offense" and you look at all the draft picks he has spent on the offense in the 1st 3 rounds of the draft, who did next to nothing -- that is why he is mediocre.

Imagine what our offense would be like if he didn't inherit arguably the best WR of all time?

If Mayhew could draft skill position players -- Detroit's offense would be unreal. What has saved Mayhew is FA signings -- Golden Tate. Steven Tulloch. Glover Quinn. Joique Bell. Rashean Mathis. James Ihedbigo.

I wish Mayhew could analyze talent coming out of college, like he can when signing FA's who have played in the NFL, because one thing you aren't going to do in the NFL is win consistently building your team through FA.

Without going back and fact checking you. I will just ask... Do you consider him MMII or Millenhew?

I am not a fan of Mayhew, but I don't lump them together either. With the logic of some here though, he did not inherit that guy. He was part of the reason he is here. Correct? As anything that has happened since early 2000's is on him also...

Mayhew hasn't missed one draft without picking a WR. Hopefully he'll take one with their 4th or 5th picks... yeah, I know there isn't any 4th or 5th.

I like this. Psychologically he can still pick a WR without actually using a draft pick.

I don't consider him MMII or Millenhew. Millen couldn't stop drafting WR's with top 10 picks. Mayhew, at least, has waited til the 2nd and 3rd round to throw away draft picks.

Mayhew's problem is -- he can't help himself when he sees a shiny new toy for the offense. Whether it is trading up to draft Best, trading up to draft LeShoure, signing Bush for RB's, to signing Burleson, drafting Young, drafting Broyles, drafting Williams (as well as Toone and Fuller), signing Tate for WR's, to drafting not one, but two TE's in the 1st round with a top 10 and a top 20 pick.

I read something today -- the top two teams in the NFL running the ball last year were Dallas and Seattle. Since Mayhew has taken over in Detroit -- he has had 8 1st round picks and spent 1 on the OL. Dallas and Seattle have had 5 in that time span and they have spent multiple 1st round picks each on OL.

Seattle has drafted a G in James Carpenter and a LT in Russell Okung, as well as top 50 pick on a Center (Max Unger) -- Unger was flipped in a deal to bring them Eric Ebron, I mean, Jimmy Graham.

Dallas has drafted not one, not two, but three pro bowl/all-pro OL in the last 4 years. Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin.

If you want to improve your line, you have to invest picks to do so. I think it is great that Lombardi talks about Stafford being more aggressive and taking shots down field. My issue is -- if you don't have time to let the WR's run the route -- Stafford isn't going to have the opportunity to make more throws down field.

I have this sick feeling Mayhew is going to draft Stone Hands Perriman and we are going to have to hear how the Lions offense is going to be unstoppable again, like last year after we drafted Graham.

I wanted to trade our 1st round pick, a mid round pick and Pettigrew last year for Graham and everyone said I was crazy. Look what NO ended up accepting for him. We could have gotten him.

I so want to go back and put up some of the quotes regarding Ebron pre and post draft from last year, but I won't. It is a new year -- I'm gonna wipe the slate clean and hope the Lions front office gets their head out of their ass this year and steer clear of any shiny toys for the offense.

Love this quote from the article:

A pretty easy way to make your team worse? Letting the best defensive tackle of his generation walk in free agency. That’s what Martin Mayhew did with Ndamukong Suh. The Lions had the league’s fiercest run defense in 2014, due in no small part to the attention Suh commanded. Now he’s gone to Miami, leaving a dramatically weakened team in his wake.

Bingo.

Meh, defense does not need superstars. Just a good scheme and a DC that knows what he is doing. That has been proven over and over. Granted you cant have bums either. Decent players that can play a role and execute the game plan is all that is required. These days you are better off with a good set of DBs than DLs.

I thought you liked the Ngata trade though?

I do, but because the price is right. Would like to see him extended at a similar price. Considering what some DTs are getting today he is not being paid like a superstar.

Thats the best of both worlds.

I know we're only paying him 8.something, but isn't he getting 7.something from Balmer?

His deal was for 12.something a year when he signed it, right? Maybe Im wrong on this though.

He's been the Ravens biggest Cap Hit a couple times I believe. (Could be wrong but I remember tallinbough it when we got Austin.)

He is carrying a 7.5 dead money hit on Balmer. That was and is going to happen Suh style regardless unless they signed a extension. He was only getting 8.5 from them.

Even though I like the trade better now by getting that 5th back in a round about way. Meow was correct in saying Balmer seemed more desperate than the Lions facing a $16 million hit, and much the reason I gathered he felt Mayhew gave up too much doing Balmer a favor.
