Very fearful about what football is becoming. Kinda a "if you can't say something good, don't say anything moment"
Most here think this is a business as usual moment. It's not.

A"Black National Anthem" played before games ?
People forced to kneel against their will ?
NFL forced to stop selling Redskin gear ?
Sports should be fun.........entertainment. A relief.
Make a comment on this board about anything like this and get a rebuke. Not much fun there.
The reading I’ve done suggests this would just be a week 1 deal. In that case it’s no different than any other awareness week the NFL already does (such as armed forces week). So if one bothers you to the point of hating football while the other is just fine, that says more about the offendee than it does about the NFL.

Now if it becomes a standard thing, that’s when it becomes a concern.

Is it a concern that at MLB games they play the national anthem and either God Bless America Or America the Beautiful regularly? (at least that’s the case in Denver)

False equivalence. Both songs are also considered universal.
Having a “Black” anthem and then the regular anthem for one week simply serves as an “awareness week” that is more for promotion than anything else.
Now if it became a weekly thing, you start (intentionally or unintentionally) creating divisions within the league and viewership. Not a good outcome.

I don’t think those are false equivalencies, but that’s just me. :)

My personal preference is if it becomes “regular”, they aren’t played one and then the other - like we would if the Toronto Blue Jays were playing at the Cubs. Maybe something like having the national anthem at the start of the game, and Lift Every Voice and Song between the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th quarter? (Equivalent to the 7th inning stretch at baseball games.)

I haven’t thought a lot about this, so I’m not trying to be argumentative. Just thinking of alternatives.

Both are songs that were written to unite America...the Star Spangled Banner was written during the War of 1812 against the British during the battle at Fort McHenry. The anthem is to represent all Americans...granted, in 1812 total equality was extremely rare anywhere in the world.

Personally, I would like to go back to the sentiments of the Kennedy Inaugural address - good American citizenship is to not ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

What Covid really brings to the forefront - is that we are all in this together - it is not every man for himself.

JFK...and his predecessor in the White House, Dwight D. Eisenhower, were people who were able to deliver the "Great USA" message to the people of the nation.

Miami of Ohio University changed their name in 1997. Not unprecedented.

For quite a few decades they had two versions of the Washington Senators baseball team. The first, moved to Minnesota in 1961 and became the Twins. The second, an expansion team in 1961, moved to Texas in 1972 and became the Rangers. Neither franchise had great success overall (the original had some success in the 20s and early 30s). So...since the Redskins haven't had success as of late...the third iteration of the Washington Senators only this time, football!

Washington Warriors was one suggestion apparently set in place. We already have the Golden State Warriors, hoping for something unique.

Washington could go with a Prince naming solution. Create a symbol that looks like giving the world the middle finger - and name the team the FUs "formerly known as the Washington Redskins."

Same symbol they give us everyday.

I know gamesmanship. You're are just trying to keep your POTM thread alive while my POTM thread suffers from disuse.
