I hope that umpires start to call no HBP if the player makes no attempt to get out of the way because of this. It is in the rule book. If umpires will not call it, you cannot blame the players for trying to get hit.

Good job by Tabata for getting on base. When down by 6, your job is to get on base. Period.

Why should a hitter have to get out of the way when a pitcher misses his spot? Leaning in is one thing, but a batter has to be allowed to stand his ground.

Sure. OK.

But the rule book defines a HBP as a pitched ball that is out of the strike zone that hits the batter and that the batter must make a legit attempt to get out of the way of the pitch (paraphrased, of course).

If baseball wants to change the definition, I am open to having that conversation. But the rule stands as written. That pitch SHOULD have been called a ball. It was the umpire's fault, not Tabata's.

They made this call in the CWS this year against Arkansas. It was also called with the bases loaded during Drysdales shutout streak. I would not have been opposed to having it called on Tabata.

It's a bad rule, and the wording needs to be changed.

But he didn't "stand his ground". If he hadn't moved, lowering his hands, arms and elbow down to where the ball was headed it would have missed him by a foot. Take a look at the slo-mo. It was probably hard for the ump to see at full speed. But he clearly moved his elbow, not so coincidentally covered with a plastic shield, down into the pitch.

That's a tough call live. I don't really blame the ump for not calling it. They rarely do. But that would have been a good place to think twice before sending him to first.

No. He was in the batters box and making a natural move at timing his swing to the pitch. The ball came very inside and hit him. No ump would call that a non-HBP...

even if he had gotten the perfect game, the 16 K game was more impressive IMO.

Those two consecutive games are just unreal - 26 KOs, 1 BB & 1 hit combined in two complete games - good luck seeing someone else come anywhere near those numbers anytime soon.

LOL...the ball hit him in the elbow...no leaning required. Take your base and no perfect game. Sucks for you Sherzer but it happens

NP - Scherzer still got the no hitter & had two of the best consecutive games ever. I am pretty sure that he is very pleased with things at this time.

Yes he was in the batter's box and yes the umps very rarely call it. But if you think he didn't intentionally lower his arm and elbow into the ball you either haven't seen the replay in slo-mo or you need an eye check.
