Mathis comes out and whines about his contract every year about this time. Fact of the matter is he has a market value contract. If he was cut he may do a little better. I could imagine if someone makes an offer to up his salary, the Eagle could sweeten the pot for him by a million or so.

He's under contract though ... You can't just cut / trade anyone who has a problem with their contract. Replacing Mathis isn't as easy as just next man up ... he's been rated as a top 5 Guard the past 2 seasons. You have 3 vet RB's back there ... you want a vet OL blocking for them.

Its just the annual Evan Mathis contract whine. Once he is satisfied that he can't earn more money elsewhere, this will all settle down. By letting his agent shop him, he can accurately gage his market value and discover what should be obvious. Offensive guards at $6.5M dollar are being paid at the top of the market.

Amen. I think this goes away unless someone offers a nice package for him.

I think they'd love to get rid of his contract and cap #. He can't run as well as Chip would like anymore.

Rosenhaus at work. He convinces these players they can get better contracts, they force their way off the Eagles and get new deals--which means Rosenhaus gets a new fee.

Mathis is 34. He may be able to get a better deal, but no one is going to trade picks for him. So either he will be cut, or he will have to play for the Eagles one more year. I hope they don't cut him, because replacing both guards at once will prove tough.

But this should make crystal clear that OL is a major need for this team and we will draft multiple linemen, probably two in the first three rounds. Peters is not getting any younger either so this investment has to be made now.

Jake Fisher in the first, Ali Marpet in the second--call me Nostradamus.

My dislike for Rosenhaus continues. I'm sure teams in the NFL hate dealing with him. Players on the other hand love him. I get it, he is very good at what he does. He is the Scott Boras.

Rosenhaus is probably right to do this. Mathis only has a couple good years left. If you look at what happened with DJAX or Shady, they both got much more guaranteed money when they left the Eagles. Mathis on the open market, probably would not see much more in average salary, but could conceivably get a higher guarantee. Say a three year contract at the same average pay, but may get $10-12M guaranteed. Winning is great and everything, but if I can swing an extra $5M guarantee out of my last contract. That is huge. Mathis will never see money like this again after he retires.
