so after the 2nd year he is only RFA with no arb rights correct? or does his age allow him to be UFA?

MAson is only 24 so he will be 26 when this one expires. he will still be our property since he has not played 10 years in the league or is over 27 (I believe that is part of the rule)

MOOGER .... clarify

thanks

nice. I was scared shitless of a goofy arb decision.
had him estimated at $3m in the roster thread, but who the hell knows where it might have ended up.

Canucks sign Raymond to 2-year, $5.1 million contract

The Vancouver Canucks have avoided arbitration with forward Mason Raymond, signing the 24-year old to a two-year, $5.1 million contract prior to his hearing.

He is set to earn $2.5 million in the first year of the contract and $2.6 in the second year. He earned just $760,000 last season.

The Cochrane, Alberta native enjoyed a breakout season with the Canucks, setting career highs in goals with 25 and assists with 28.
In 203 career games, Raymon has 45 goals and 52 assists. He was originally selected in the second round, 51st overall by the Canucks in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Criteria to become UFA

Group 3 UFA
any Player who either has seven Accrued Seasons or is 27 years of age or older as of June 30 shall, if his most recent SPC has expired, with such expiry occurring either as of June 30 of the applicable League Year or June 30 of any prior League Year, become an Unrestricted Free Agent.

Failed on both number of years and age.

Group 5 UFA
Means any Player who has completed ten (10) or more professional seasons (minor league or NHL seasons, but excluding any season in Major Juniors), and who did not earn in the final year of his SPC more than that year's Average League Salary

Failed on both average and completion of 10 pro seasons.

Group 6 UFA
Means any Player who is age 25 or older who has completed three or more professional seasons, whose SPC has expired and in the case of a Player other than a goaltender, has played less than 80 NHL Games

Failed on 80 game criteria

That would make him a RFA after this contract is up.

He could likely have gotten more in arbitration.......maybe the two years factored in (aren't arbitration rulings for 1 yr).... seems like he signed for less to stay a Canuck... if so, my estimation of him has gone up.....

I believe a player can opt to go to arbitration any time they are eligible. It's the team who can only take a player to arbitration once.

Eligible for arbitration:
  • Between 18 and 20 with at least four years of professional experience
  • 21 years old and have played at least three years of professional hockey
  • Ages 22 and 23 with at least two years experience in the pro ranks
  • 24 or older with at least one year of professional experience
