Bryce Miller

Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Despite being just a fourth-round pick less than 12 months ago, Miller has more makings than arguably any pitcher in the system to make an aggressive leap. He flashed 99 mph in Minor League Spring Training and has a gnarly slider that could probably play in a big league bullpen sooner than later. His trajectory will likely be determined by what profile the Mariners view him as long term.

Miller went the JUCO route in college, transferring from Blinn (Texas) after one season to Texas A&M, where he had to prove himself a full-time reliever before finally getting the chance to start in his final season. That opportunity was a big part of why he turned down his 38th-round selection by the Marlins in 2018 and other opportunities in the shortened ‘20 Draft.

Despite the transition from the bullpen, Miller held his velocity and featured some of the best fastball metrics in last year’s Draft. He has three effective secondary offerings, the best of which is a mid-80s slider with power and depth. He also utilizes an upper-70s curveball as an offspeed pitch and mixes in a heavy mid-80s changeup. Though he has a high-tempo delivery, Miller generates his stuff with arm speed more than effort. He has shown the ability to maintain the quality of his pitches deep into games. His arm action is a bit long and leads to some inconsistencies with his control and command that he'll need to iron out to reach his ceiling as a mid-rotation starter.

Taylor Dollard

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 45 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

A promotion to High-A Everett in 2021 was a little bit of a wakeup call for the former Cal Poly product after he struck out 36.4% of the batters he faced at Low-A Modesto. For a righty who consistently fills up the strike zone, a dip in velocity as the season wore on -- from 92-94 mph to 90-92 -- could have played a part. And there’s also an adjustment curve with the 23-year-old, given that he was mostly a reliever in college and in the Cape Cod League before the Mariners took him for full pick value in the fifth round of the 2020 Draft.

At 6-foot-3, Dollard has an ideal frame and a four-pitch mix that he utilizes well, though he has more feel for pitching than pure stuff. His fastball tends to sit around 90 mph and can touch a bit higher, and it plays up because of his command and the sink the pitch has. His upper-70s slider misses bats and will even flash plus occasionally and he folds in a slower curve with decent depth as well. He has good feel for his changeup, giving him four very usable offerings.

Given that he’s a little older, the 2022 season will be a big one for Dollard, who has the ceiling of being a back-end starter in the big leagues and the floor of a swing-man out of the bullpen. He’ll need to find better ways to limit extra-base hit power and continue fortifying his secondary pitches to realize his full potential.

Emerson Hancock

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Thought to be the top college right-hander in the Draft class of 2020, Hancock ended up being the second one taken behind Max Meyer when the Mariners selected him No. 6 overall. That marked the third straight Draft Seattle went with a college righty in the first round. Since signing for $5.7 million, the biggest challenge has been to keep the tall right-hander on the mound, as arm and shoulder issues limited him to just 44 2/3 innings and kept him from attending the Futures Game.

From a pure stuff standpoint, Hancock still displays many of the attributes that made him one of the best arms in his Draft class. He can run his four-seam fastball up into the upper 90s and his two-seamer up to 95 mph, though not as consistently in the upper registers. He’ll continue to throw both a slider that flashes plus and a solid curveball, though with good fade and deception, his changeup is likely his best secondary offering.

Hancock is capable of throwing strikes with all of his offerings, but he hasn’t always repeated his delivery well and lost reps because arm issues cost him valuable time for refining his mechanics. He didn’t pitch more than five innings in any of his 2021 starts, and even though it was encouraging to see him throw well when he got to Double-A, he only made three starts there. Some feel other pitchers in the system like Matt Brash have passed him up, though a full, healthy season could put doubts to rest.

Thing is..Dollard is a control pitcher ..which..
Is good to have...

Yes..Hancock's..arm issues..
And...miller..does..look good...fastball 65 slider 55

This is a bit surprising.

Mariners designated OF Alberto Rodriguez for assignment.

Rodriguez has been removed from the Mariner's 40-man roster to make room for newly-claimed right-hander J.B. Bukauskas. The 22-year-old outfielder hit .261/.336/.396 with 10 homers and six steals last year for High-A Everett.

Has there been logic for this move? I’m not opposed to it but it is the equivalent of in football trading a middle round draft pick for backup kicker.

Ya that is my take as well. I don't see the upgrade or even the chance of an upgrade.

Seems like Rodriguez may end up back with the team but it is just weird. It is like they keep collecting all of these relievers who will be DFA’d if all goes this weird plan they have paved out.
