Malcolm Butler missed curfew, had weed on him, and argued with coaches over it

Maybe because Lynch was 20% successful during the season:noidea:
It's been discussed pass play is the right call. Slant from a 5'- 9" mobile QB wrong pass play.

Doesn't matter, Lynch is a beast, you go to him, PERIOD ... The moment had Lynch written all over it.. Pats weren't a good Goal-line defense either that year... Slant route is dangerous from that distance...

I'm not sure what constitutes what's a "good" goal line team in your opinion? Lynch had already been stopped on a short yardage play earlier in the game. NE had their jumbo package in. Like you said it was a Lynch moment. That's what everyone expected.

Like many have said pass play was the right call just NOT the dumb slant. Why they sent Lynch to the wing was just plain stupid. "IF" that play had worked for Seattle they would've been considered geniuses.

A roll out by RW there and I believe we're having a different discussion. RW strolls in, finds a receiver or throws it away.

You mean like IF Brady catches that ball?
Or if the O does anything the first qtr +?
Or Cooks runs to the sticks?
Or the D made one stop all game?
Or the refs turn over one of those calls?
Or G-Ski didn't miss a FG and XP?
Or if Butler was in and got burnt or missed an assignment?
Or the refs call a an illegal pick on the Eagle TE 1st down?
Or Hogan or Gronk get a call on the last play.
Or, if...

It's BBs legacy to live with.

As I've said I wish BB had played him so we wouldn't be having these discussions. None of us know what could've been regardless of MB playing or not if just one or two plays from either team goes the other way.

I'm not going to torment myself on what ifs.

All it may have taken was one defensive stop. The offense was more or less fine.

Sometimes the right play is the play everyone expects.

Pete imo buckled to bill. Any of the other 28 NFL coaches are there, he shoves lynch down their throat. But he saw bill and assumed he would stop it, and outsmarted himself.

And on the flip side, Doug pederson didn't bow down to bill, and just did what he would normally do when he ran that trick play TD.

That imo is why Doug best bill and Pete didn't.

On the goal-line it doesn't matter what a team expect though, you just match the big uglies vs the other big uglies and ram it across the line... We got cute, and it costs us ... And I agree, if Bevell was hell bent on throwing just use play action and let Wilson roll out, he can run it if it's there, hit someone in the back of the end zone if it's there, OR throw it away....The slant we ran was just so risky...

Let me state at the outset that I agree with you. However, given the down, the TO situation, etc calling a pass play there was not out of the realm of reasonableness. What you absolutely don't do is call THAT pass play. At a minimum, you fake it to lynch (make the pats commit to stopping that) and then throw a fade or a quick out pattern to the WRs who will be getting single coverage because the pats where in goal line D. If the pass is incomplete you are then free to run whatever play you want on third down because you have a timeout. You can run lynch and if he gets stuffed call timeout and again, do whatever you want on 4th down.

Running that slant play INSIDE (where all the bodies were) was not smart. Too many things could go wrong

This. One decent tackle or play that stops One Drive or turns one TD drive into a Field Goal drive.

The Patriots did that once in the 2nd half and the Patriot promptly took the lead.

Could Butler have helped the D do that? In my mind absolutely.

At the very least just having him in the defense as he had been all year could have helped the rest of the secondary just play that little bit better.

How many Superbowls did Holmgren win with that philosophy?

I don't think Lynch would have made it. His head wasn't in the game and he lacked heart for some reason. I think he was already looking ahead at leaving the team.

Oh ffs. He'd been breaking down physically for 1.5 seasons at that point already. He'd been AWFUL at short yardage situations for a year already at that point.

Effort has never been his problem.

A Lynch fumble was no more unlikely than Butler's INT.
