Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Yulieski Gurriel will not be suspended for the World Series after making an offensive gesture toward Dodgers' hurler Yu Darvish on Friday.

Instead, he'll serve a five-game ban at the beginning of the 2018 season. Even if he had been handed a suspension for the Series, Gurriel would have been entitled to an appeal, which likely would have delayed his sentence until after the series had concluded anyways.

If they are really serious about any of this no tolerance stuff as far as racial slurs, etc., they should have suspended him for the next 2 games of the series and let the chips fall where they may. The reasons the commish stated are a cop-out. 5 games next season means nothing and the fine and loss of salary are chump change for these guys.
I'm by no means some bleeding heart liberal either. But we live in a world where we try to teach our children that this stuff is not okay and this joke of a punishment says to those kids that it's okay as long as you are a good athlete and there is money to be made.

It's pretty clear that everyone (Gurriel, MLB, the players union, etc) wanted to put this incident behind them quickly. It sounds like the commissioner struck a deal with everyone. You'll get suspended 5 games during the regular season (with pay because it comes during the regular season), the player won't appeal (he's already said he won't appeal), the players union will stay out of it and Gurriel will apologize to Darvish personally.

Again, to me, that sounds like a deal involving all parties concerned. Any appeal by the player or involvement by the union would have only dragged this incident out. Now, nobody will be talking about it a week from now.
