Pretty sure they had a choice. #1 with lindros or #2 and get players from Minn & their farm team. They went with option #2 to try & be more competitve their first year... At the time tho Fat Ballon was a great pick. Who wouldve known he's go down the shithole after his rookie year faster then cheechoo

I'm pretty sure they got boned, they got to pick through the northstars because they were on the verge of folding out of the league before ponied up all that money to get born green to move. Then the nordiques were awarded the first overall. The sharks are the only team in the moderen expansion era that wasn't given a first overall. Every team after them were given the first overall and picks through teams for expansion drafts

Its fuzzy on how it went down, but Im pretty sure they were given the expansion draft, then had the option of #1 pick or Desperial (sp?) draft from Minn & #2 pick...

It's my understanding that picking 2nd instead of 1st was the price the Sharks had to pay to get into the league a year earlier than scheduled. Sharks were supposed to join the NHL for the 92/93 season with Tampa Bay and Ottawa but pushed to join in 91/92. The NHL felt they were doing this so they could draft Lindros thus part of the agreement to let the team join early was to forefit the 1st overall pick but they were allowed both a despersal and expansion draft instead of just an expansion.

Can you imagine if they wouldve gotten Lindros and made the same Philly did... That wouldve been one hell of a way to start out San Joses team history... Oh well, im glad how it played out in the long run. if it went any other way, we wouldve never had that 93-94 season, whih is still my fav. And Irbe wouldve never been a shark, and I wouldve never became an Irbe fan, and mightve never gotten into goaltending...

i stand corrected, they got draft from only a handful of teams but not the entire league at their despersal draft,. Every team after that got to pick from every team in the league
