Javier Lopez gets an $8.5 million, two-year contract.

Giants pick up the $5 million contract option for Affeldt.

Lopez had to be resigned. But Affeldt for $5 million? I can only assume there must be a limited number of quality free agent lefty relievers.

Keeps our bullpen among the strongest in the game. I'm happy with these signings.

Affeldt was coming back one way or another. He and Lopez were the top 2 lefties on the market, Giants must have felt he would have gone for more than 5 mil per (which is very good judgement IMO).

I think the exercise of the option is just a placeholder until they work out a two year deal for similar money to Lopez.

I am glad Sabean stuck to his word and kept the pitching staff intact. That is one expensive BP now though wooh.

Now all we need is a shortstop and a centerfielder. :bounce: If only Zito would retire and make that possible.

Next season is gonna be the shit!

Quick payroll update:

Under contract(13 Players)

Zito 19
Huff 10
Cain 15.3
Wilson 8.5
Franchez 6
Affeldt 5
Lopez 4.3
Posey 0.6
Bum 0.6
Belt 0.5
Crawford 0.4
Pill 0.4
Stewart 0.4
TOTAL: 71 MM

Arb Eligible -- Likely to Be Retained (9 players, with estimated salary)

Tim 19.2
Chez 5.2
Kepp 2.7
RamRam 2.3
Casilla 1.9
Song 2.5
Panda 3.2
Romo 1.3
Nate 1.2
TOTAL: 39.5MM

Arb Eligible, Unlikely to be Offered Arb (4 players)

Whitey
Torres
Fonty
Burriss

Free Agents (6 players)

Beltran
Ross
DeRo
PTB
Cabrera
Mota

By my estimate, that's 22 players at a cost of 110.5MM. Add in 13.6 for RoRo's dead money, and our 2012 ML payroll stands at $125.1MM with 3 open spot.

SP: Tim, Cain, Bum, Song, Chez
RP: Beard, Affledt, Lopez, Zito, RamRam, Casilla, Romo
C: Posey, Stewart
IF: Huff, Franchez, Kepp, Panda, Pill, Crawford
OF: Belt, Nate

Torres is estimated to bring in 2.5 in arb, which he's not worth. He's still got value, so I'd expect the Giants to decline arb and bring him back at 1.5 to 2. That leaves 2 OF spots at $127MM. Someone among Ford/Christian/Peguero is going to make the team at minimum salary.

That leaves on OF spot open and a standing payroll just north of $125MM.

Beltran is obviously the target, but Ross is a possibility as well. Cuddyer might be a fit, and would alleviate the need for Kepp and his $2.7MM. Another possible payroll shed is Chez and his $5.2MM, but I doubt he'd have much value to another team at one year of control and that salary. $1.5MM could be saved with Runzler instead of Casilla or RamRam. About the same could be saved with Fonty instead of Kepp if we don't get Cuddyer.

Crisp is going to get $6-8MM, and Beltran is going to command $12-15MM. I don't see how we're going to add either without spending well above $130MM and I'm not sure ownership will approve that.

One potential place to save would be Timmy -- we could backload a deal so that he only takes $15MM this year.

A potential way to save some money would be to DFA/trade Keppy, Fonty and RamRam, replace with Buriss, Gillaspie and Runzler (both league min). Save about 5 mil there use that on Crisp and if like you said, sign Tim to a backloaded deal save even a few more million and go after a bigger target instead like Cuddyer or at least have room to think about Beltran. Or adding Crisp AND Sizemore.

Thank you for these updates. Keep 'em coming.

1) Normally I would be against backloading a player's contract, but in this case, with Rowand and eventually Zito's monster contracts rolling off, and it being Timmay, an exception should be made. As long as the deferment doesn't last past his reasonably estimated time as a player.

2) Another area of possible "savings" is the painful possibility of trading Wilson. While he is the heart and soul of Giants insanity, $8.5 mill for a closer who may not be that much better than Casilla on paper is a lot of money. Money we could use on an everyday player. The Rangers have to be very frustrated with their bullpen right now, and seem to have a surplus of hitters. Wilson for Andrus? Just throwing that out there.

3) Does anyone know the factual status of the stadium loan? I have searched the Internets, but could not determine with reliable certainty when the loan is actually due (2020 is the closest I could come - but I don't know if that means before the 2020 season or after), or what the annual amount is (it seems to be around $20 million). Maybe it's still too far off to be of practical concern, but inquiring minds want to know. Because $20 million a year can get us a nice player or three.

Nice work. I owe you rep.

This was essentially my concern with the Affeldt signing: as good as he was down the stretch, can this team really afford to spend $5 million on another lefty reliever? I'm not so sure, given the team's question marks. Should that $ been used toward a Crisp-type player?

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.

My understanding was that it was a $20MM a year mortgage that expires in 2020. 12 down, 8 years to go.

Have we really played 12 years in the new park?? Seems like yesterday I was watching Kevin Elster play home run derby there.

I thought it expired in 2015? I'll do some research.

His evil brother, Scott Hariston.

Though Jerry had some big hits against us too.

I think at last count there were 6 Hairston brothers in MLB...all of them fucking with the Giants on a regular basis....

And fuck David Eckstein too...

Funny I thought he was talking about Khalil Greene circa 2003-2005.

The only thing I can find with any certainty is that the loan was for $170 mill.

So I played with Excel, and the PMT function, to see if I could find a combination of terms that made sense.

Assuming the $170mm, and 20 years, at 8%, I got an annual payment of $17.3 mill. So we may be in the ballpark, as it were. At 9%, that makes the payment appx $18.6mm/yr.

If we go to 15 yrs, 8% = $19.9mm/yr. 9% = $21.1mm/yr.

All of that is speculative and assumes a fixed rate. This could likely have more exotic and variable terms which could change everything. Or they could have refi-ed.

Any way you slice it, it will be a great day for the Giants when that last payment is made. That's assuming that most of that money goes into player salaries or development.
