Looney can't suck as much as Goodwin

Looney actually played ok to pretty well today. Goodwin is a hot poop burrito. I can't see how Looney could do worse playing center than Goodwin does.

It's only one game though. I'd want a bigger sample size before agreeing to this. Boone actually played extremely well against one of the best pass rushers in the game today, that doesn't mean that Boone is an upgrade from Staley. Boone is no Joe Thomas as a LT.

I totally agree with that. However, I think Goodwin is horrible enough that an unknown, who might be an average or even good center, should get the nod over a guaranteed suck bag.

He played IIRC Looney and Kilgore rotated no?

Yeah, he was out there for some plays. I'm not exactly sure if it was for just few when someone got dinged up or what. But also, I think he was our last lineman so he had to go in.

I thought he was going to be one of our top back ups to go in. I was surprised previous weeks when Synder went in over Kilgore. Then this week, Looney went in over Kilgore when Staley got hurt.

Do you think it was fair that they yanked Looney after the holding call that sprung Hunter?

Honestly I feel like the center to qb exchange and continuity is more important. I don't feel it's that easy to just insert a new center in like that. But that's just me.

Didn't matter; they were just running out the clock.

I disagree. That was an 18 yard gain which put them at the 38 with 50 seconds left and two timeouts. I think they would have tried to score a FG after that big first down play. Instead, being back at the 10 because of looney they just decided to eat it.

I wasn't at all impressed with Looney, Kilgore is much better. Goodwin is going to start the rest of the season at center, we need to learn to accept that.

I hate that phrase "big boy" or anything close it- "big boy pants" and even worse when a girl says "big girl panties"...

I honestly haven't watched Goodwin closely enough to know one way or the other. But if I remember correctly, PFF had him ranked among the top centers this year only a couple weeks ago. Interesting that there are such wide ranging opinions on him.

Jonathan Goodwin - C - 49ers

49ers C Jonathan Goodwin admitted Friday retirement has "crossed his mind" for after this season.

Goodwin turned 35 earlier this month and isn't signed for the 2014 season. Centers often play effectively late into their 30s. Goodwin has graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 16 center in 2013, though he's struggled some in pass blocking. The Niners' offseason contract offer may determine Goodwin's fate.

All the more reason not to necessarily believe anything PFF evaluates. But any center is going to look a ton better when he's playing next to 2 pro bowl (one all-pro') caliber guards.
