I see Hoyer more as a replacing Kaep and Gabbert. I don't think it would preclude them from trying to acquire Cousins or anyone else availanle
It doesn't preclude from Cousins sure, but Hoyer isn't so bad he'll prevent other players from developing properly either.

Given that Hoyer looks to be signing, if you had to lean one way or the other, would you say it's more or less likely that Cousins is still in play for SF? I'd say probably no.....perhaps the Redskins were asking for more than what the Niners were willing to give up (assuming yet another rumour that the supposed deal was done.....really isn't close to being done.)

I don't think the deal was ever close to being done and I do think the Redskins are asking for more than the 49ers are willing to give. I don't think the Hoyer signing makes it more or less likely that the 49ers acquire Cousins. I think that depends on what the Redskins are willing to accept in return.

As I said in the Niner thread, I think it makes it more likely that the 49ers would go after Cousins next year in free agency as opposed to trading draft pick(s) for him this year.

Tough time to be a Skins fan at this moment, but that could all go away easily. Right now I read about them and get a little chuckle, between their results from last year, their QB situation, their GM situation, Danny boy (over all, nothing specific)...all good stuff.

However, I'm thinking the GM is in rehab so if he gets out and comes back or they replace him and then somehow get KC signed then this is all put behind them rather quickly. They still have Bruce, which as a Dallas fan annoys me. Without him this thing would be way off the rails already.

Who would they get at #2 that would make it worth it to lose your potential franchise starting QB? QBs don't seem worth the pick.

That's just it...apparently WAS doesn't view Cousins as the franchise guy. In which case if they can get #2 overall and go after a stop gap like Romo, or Cutler (once he's released), I think you have to applaud that actually.

With the loss of their top 2 WRs, they may have trouble convincing Cousins to sign long term anyway.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Redskins franchise player Kirk Cousins "appealed personally" to owner Dan Snyder for a trade.

Per Mort, Cousins was "basically told not to get his hopes up." The well has been poisoned in Washington, with team president Bruce Allen alienating his franchise quarterback for essentially no reason. The nature of the modern NFL is that you have to pay quarterbacks more than you might sometimes be comfortable with. Whomever ends up replacing Cousins in Washington, this year or next, will almost certainly be a downgrade. The Redskins still can't stay out of their own way. It's a sad state of affairs for what should be a crown-jewel franchise.

If the Skins don't trade him, he'll just leave next winter. Might as well see what you can get now and start the offensive rebuild this season.

This is one hell of a circus right here. I could almost feel bad for Redskins fans.

Almost.

Applaud it? Are you freaking serious? This has nothing to do w/ whether Allen or Snyder are great talent evaluators. This is ego - plain and simple & Snyder not wanting anyone to tell him what to do. Also - no way that Romo (& probably Cutler) are signing with this mess. I also see a good chance of the Skins royally screwing up that high pick (like they did w/ RG3).

I have no idea how this mess will turn out, but I take major offense to anyone giving credit to these clowns in this situation. BTW - the GM on the way out was a Cousins fan & was ready to extend him last offseason for a relatively cheap amt. Unfortunately - those two fools got in the way and well here we are.

Redskins sign Terrell McClain.

Chris Baker is better. But they will let him go .

What a train wreck that team is.

Or they could shop him at the deadline, get pennies on the dollar, and screw their season.

It could totally be a by-product of being a dysfunctional mess, but clearly they (you can pin it on Snyder or whomever) don't think Cousins is worth a $100 mil contract...on that end, he's proven he can put up stats, but not a whole more to me so yes, getting #2 overall is a good deal if you're not going to lock him up long term.

Should it happen, what they do with that pick, matters a lot more to 'Skins fans.

That's just it. The Niners will not give up the #2 overall pick for Cousins. The Skins don't have any leverage. They don't see him as being worth 20-25M/year, so there won't be a long term deal and now Cousins wants out of DC no matter what. It's either trade him for some value now or let him walk for nothing next year. The rest of the league knows that. The Skins have backed themselves into a corner.
