Earlier today I was on the 49ers - Seahawks game thread and something really stuck out to me, the massive amount of 49ers fans calling Russell Wilson a midget.

You know what the hilarious part about that is?

Median height in the United States for an adult caucasion male (because let's be honest, 95% on this site fall into that category), is 5'9.

Being 5'11 would make Russell Wilson taller than 70% of U.S adult males.

Statistically speaking, 7 out of every 10 49ers fans who call Wilson a midget are shorter than him. Once you adjust for the fact that only insecure manlets will even bring up Wilson's height, it is likely even higher.

Our QB may be shorter than your QB, but he is likely taller than you.

The "midget" trash talking is in comparison to the average NFL QB not the average male.

That's like citing the average weight in the United States and saying Todd Pinkston wasn't small.

I would never call someone a midget, short, manlet etc. unless they were significantly shorter than the median among the population, regardless of their profession.

It's called hyperbole.

Like saying, "Oh man, this is taking forever."

It's still hypocritical. How much you want to bet most of the people who bring up Wilson's height are manlets themselves?

Using hyperbole is not hypocritical. It's a normal method of communicating.

And it's not hypocritical for a short guy to call another person short. Nor is it hypocritical for a fat guy to call another person fat. It's accurate. It would be hypocritical if a short guy said to an equally short guy "You're too short to ride this ride" but then went on it himself. There's huge a difference.

5' 11", you say? I'm about that tall.

Seriously, height doesn't matter that much at QB. Look at what Doug Flutie did over the years. Sure, the better numbers came from his years in the Canadian league, but it still proves my point.

Well, I'm not sure that rationale holds true.

height doesn't matter: look at Doug Flutie.

Arm strength doesn't matter: look at Drew Brees.

Speed & quickness doesn't matter: look at Tom Brady.

So you If you find a 5'7 QB who runs a 5.2 and has a weak arm, I don't see any reason why he couldn't succeed in the NFL?

Height is something, but it's clearly not everything based on how well Wilson has played so far.

If people want to call Wilson a "midget" because they've got nothing else, let them. Some people just like grasping at straws.

C'mon, really?

He's relatively short for an NFL QB. 100% of the QB's in the NFL today are his height or taller, so he's called a midget and it's not just from 49er fans. I don't see what the big deal is or why that's so hard to grasp. He's short for an NFL QB, period.

No disrespect intended to Wilson. I think he's a good QB and a bit of an anomaly - good for him.

And I'll add that when measuring physical attributes, scouts and fans and analysts are naturally going to measure how they compare to others in the league, not how they compare to the general population. If a WR at the combine runs a 5.0 40-yard dash, are they going to say "This guy is way faster than the median population in this country" or are they going to say "This guy is slow"?

If they are going to compare them to others in the league then why not compare his performance to the rest of the league, instead of his height?

I just think it's hilarious that the height thing still comes up. He has demonstrated time and time again that his height is not detrimental to him while passing inside or outside the pocket. If anything you can make the case that his height has attributed to his escapability in the pocket due to the fact that he is not as easy to find as a 6'4 QB.

But hey, if we're going to label players by attributes that don't seem to impact their play, maybe we should start calling Colin Kaepernick trash because of his trailer park tattoos?

It's the use of the term "midget" that tends to rile people up. In terms of the average NFL quarterback, he's short, but people don't just say he's short, they say he's a "midget". Everyone knows he's several inches shorter than the average NFL quarterback. The only people who refer to him as a "midget" are the people who want to get under a Seahawks fan's skin because they have nothing else they can legitimately criticize about him. There's a way to reference his height without getting derogatory about it though.

Is there a way to reference Colin Kaepernick looking like Aaron Hernandez without being derogatory about it?

I agree that he should be compared with the "requirements" of the position, but the term "midget" is ridiculous.

The optimum height for an NFL QB is considered to be in the 6'0" to 6'5" range. Wilson is 5'11". It really is not a significent difference but people are just not used to persons succeeding at this position at this level at his height. He has other factors that offset any negatives.

Let morons call him a midget all they want to. They will just look even more foolish when a "midget" destroys their teams.

When did bible verses and references become trailer park-ish and trash? :laugh3:

Surely you could, but you would be wrong. Hernandez has a round head, Kap's is more pointed. Kap's got a bigger nose. Virtually all of his features, except maybe similar skin tone, aren't much like Hernandez at all.

Oh! That changes everything!

Not like Lil Wayne has bible verses and references tattoo'd all over his body, and I mean every knows he is quite the model citizen.

Regardless of the content it makes him look like a hood rat, or someone you would expect to be the Oakland Raiders starting QB.

I'm not fond of disparaging people with tattoos either, even if that person has a lot of them. I have plenty of friends with tattoos and quite a few with a lot of tattoos... the last thing I'd call them is a "hood rat" or "trash" or, as I've seen other people call Kaepernick, a "thug". There are folks in the military that get a lot of tattoos as well and I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't use any of those terms to describe them either.
