no shit? did they?? seriously??
f'n bravo if they did

yup ... received a TSN text message.
link is up now: NHL rejects Kovalchuk contract for salary cap circumvention

The nhl is funny (and retarded). Labeling this a "retirement contract" yet Hossa's isn't (when he's signed until 42 and his last 4 years he makes 3.5 TOTAL).

They're messing with the wrong man in this one.

I look forward to seeing captain Lou vs. the weasel. however it plays out.
I AM glad that the NHL has actually drawn a line in the sand.
whether it was Kovalchuck or not doesn't really matter to me.

Ok, so you cut two years off even though there's no age max in the CBA and players are playing longer now.

Apparently no one plays past age 42 now. Oh, wait. lol

Lou will destroy bettman on this one. That I am certain of.

Well, he's the only one to ever have a 17 year deal, but Hossa and Luongo both got a 12 year deal at the age of 30.

i guess what i mean is that he'll be the oldest when the contract is up. he'd be 44...come on, an elite player like kovy going til 44? i think that's where it was different. those 2 years are big i guess. i mean, it's obvious that it IS a circumvention of the cap, so it SHOULD be stopped, the others should've too.

another good point is that this deal had the lowest salary at the end. the last 5 years of the deal had kovy at 550K, the next closest is hossa, who has 1mil/last 4 years. i guess it just crossed their imaginary line.

Hockey is a business just like any other business. You look for any way to operate within the rules to get the most out of what you want.

Can't fault them for trying.

Yes, I do believe the league minimum salary for five years or whatever was the breaking point, more than the length or the early values.

Looks like the NHL agreed with me this contract was terrible for the NHL and the fans. Best news of the week by far. I wish it would have been done sooner (Hossa or the Det contracts) but this will have to work.

hell no you can't. They did it within the parameters of the CBA, as crappy as it was.

Good for the league to finally TRYING to close the gaping glaring open door of a loophole

but yes... too little, to late, this may get ugly

I havent read the CBA but if Bettman is the final authority on contracts then he is within his rights to shut it down. I am going to look and see if I find something.

Too little too late NHL. Should've rejected the Hossa one as well.

Time to get bent over by Uncle Lou. Enjoy...
