I know it wasn't all Alex Smith's fault last night but this guy is obviously inconsistent enough that we should start talking about a possible replacement. This offense must get better! Who might we be able to trade for next season?

For me I'd like to get Matt Flynn. he hasn't played many games but when he did play, he impressed the world. The QB staff obviously has things right in Green Bay and I'd like his chances even more with Harbaugh guiding him. The problem is, that team does not need anymore talent sent their way lol and we'd be giving up a lot for him :/

Peyton Manning? Would the Colts give him up? It's becoming more and more likely Andrew Luck will stay in Indy with Peyton's career still on hold.

Matt Barkley could definitely be an elite QB eventually.

Your Thoughts?

rather they look to develop a younger QB, whether its CK, Tolzien, another draft pick. Alex won't be good every game, most QB's would be rattled with that kind of pressure.

I heard Pittsburgh was looking to replace Roethlisberger after his performance in Baltimore this year too.

no qb would look good with their offensive line getting completely spanked every down. sure he made a few bad throws but when he did get time to hit someone the refs blew it.

Which question?

Who might we be able to trade for? We might be able to trade for a bunch of QBs. Peyton is a possibility, as is just about every backup QB in the league. Would you want to trade for Matt Flynn? What would you give up? I'd be hard pressed to give up anything more than our 2nd.

In the draft Barkley will be gone. Probably high enough that we can't move up to get him. Same with Jones.

Keenum would be an interesting prospect depending on how things go for the next 4 months for him. I'd also be interested in Griffin III, who will go before our pick, but may be within reach with a reasonable trade.

But can we afford to move up and lose an opportunity at a CB, WR or another pass rusher?

I'd love to be able to address one of those position, then trade our second for a 2013 first round pick that we can use to attack QB in 2013.

Everything coming out of the Colts sounds like they plan to draft Luck, and keep Manning until he retires... both the owner and the GM have said as much.

As to the Packers backup, he may have impressed you... but he didn't impress me. The 49ers offensive line doesn't get to throw out backups at both Tackle positions and still not skip a beat, meaning... the 49ers actually have to block people instead of just hold everyone. Plus, the 49ers receivers actually have to get open with skill and talent... they aren't allowed to shove off the DBs. You add those two things up, Flynn will be just as bad as Alex Smith or maybe even worse...

I am not talking about that game, I talking about his play overall.

Alex Smith is our stop gap QB, just that he's done such a good job of it. see no reason why we wouldn't re-sign him to continue as our stop gap QB.

you said it wasn't all his fault, so thats the "answer"

Ummmmmm....

Trade the farm for #12. :)

Realistically speaking do you think the Niners could get anything if they put the transition tag on Alex & tried to trade him to... say... the Chiefs? Maybe the Browns?

I'm not too crazy about trading much for any team's backup QB. This past offseason, Kolb was all the rave, and Arizona gave up a lot to get him. Right now, they're not exactly jumping for joy over this. There's still a lot of football to be played. Let's see how Alex does the remainder of the season and in the playoffs before putting his head on the chopping block.

Look I know we are going to lose some games as we are expected to. I'm just not sold on Alex Smith winning a super bowl for us. If he does then I'll take it back but for now we are watching his numbers slip the past 3 games and it kind of made me want to see what was on the market next season. Now I understand I pissed some of you off and that was not my intention. I apologize for that. This thread was only to discuss "possible" qb options. That's it.

That all sounds about right. It would be ideal If someone offered us a 1st in 2013 for our 2nd like the Panthers did a few years ago. I'm not sure if there is any QB who could be coming out of college next year that i would want the extra 2013 pick for, though. Alex will most likely sign a long term deal after this season anyways.
