Let's Go Bucs!
I got this story from 2 sites. Bucs Dugout.com & Pirates Prospects.com.
Looks as though the Liriano deal still is NOT a Done Deal quite yet.
We had heard a week or so ago, that Liriano & the Pirates had agreed to a new "Revised" contract, with the same figures as the 1st. ( 2 Yrs, 12.75M )
The revised part of the contract being, that Liriano was supposed to get a reduced salary in yr 1 of the deal, should he miss time at the start of the season, due to his broken bone in his Non - Pitching arm.
Seemed like everything was fine with the new deal & that everything had been agreed upon by both parties?
Well no, not quite yet. according to the aricles that I have read on the above sites that I made mention to. For the Pirates to be able to reduce Liriano's salary they want him to agree to a Minor League deal with an invitation to spring training. If he proves himself healthy, & ready to pitch by the start of this season? Liriano, would then get his 2 yr contract in full, for the entire 12.75M
Pirates Doctors, don't feel Liriano will be ready by the start of this yr & that he is likely to miss some time with the arm injury.
The reason the Bucs want to do a minor league deal is, that they could reduce Liriano's salary with a minor league deal. However, according to the articles I read, The Pirates cannot reduce Liriano's salary on a guaranteed Major League Deal.
Two things that I know of from the articles, are holding up the completion of the deal between Liriano & the Pirates.
1 Liriano is believed to be holding out for at least one season of guaranteed money. Which, the Pirates are balking at with his injury.
2 On the Pirates end. I am not sure that a team can do a multi yr Minor League deal?
The article said the Pirates are still negotiating with Liriano & it is believed that the Pirates still want him. However, they do not want to pay the full freight of the deal, if Liriano will miss time this season due to his injury, to his Non - Pitching arm.
If the Pirates cannot come to terms with Liriano at the contract terms that the team wants? It was said, that the Pirates would be comfortable walking away from Liriano & going with either Locke or McPhearson in the rotation to start the yr.
This story, never sems to end.
I hope it works out & the Pirates & Liriano do finally agree, as I think that he could help our rotation alot.
I am getting very frustrated with this situation though.
