I got this story from 2 sites. Bucs Dugout.com & Pirates Prospects.com.

Looks as though the Liriano deal still is NOT a Done Deal quite yet.

We had heard a week or so ago, that Liriano & the Pirates had agreed to a new "Revised" contract, with the same figures as the 1st. ( 2 Yrs, 12.75M )

The revised part of the contract being, that Liriano was supposed to get a reduced salary in yr 1 of the deal, should he miss time at the start of the season, due to his broken bone in his Non - Pitching arm.

Seemed like everything was fine with the new deal & that everything had been agreed upon by both parties?

Well no, not quite yet. according to the aricles that I have read on the above sites that I made mention to. For the Pirates to be able to reduce Liriano's salary they want him to agree to a Minor League deal with an invitation to spring training. If he proves himself healthy, & ready to pitch by the start of this season? Liriano, would then get his 2 yr contract in full, for the entire 12.75M

Pirates Doctors, don't feel Liriano will be ready by the start of this yr & that he is likely to miss some time with the arm injury.

The reason the Bucs want to do a minor league deal is, that they could reduce Liriano's salary with a minor league deal. However, according to the articles I read, The Pirates cannot reduce Liriano's salary on a guaranteed Major League Deal.

Two things that I know of from the articles, are holding up the completion of the deal between Liriano & the Pirates.

1 Liriano is believed to be holding out for at least one season of guaranteed money. Which, the Pirates are balking at with his injury.

2 On the Pirates end. I am not sure that a team can do a multi yr Minor League deal?

The article said the Pirates are still negotiating with Liriano & it is believed that the Pirates still want him. However, they do not want to pay the full freight of the deal, if Liriano will miss time this season due to his injury, to his Non - Pitching arm.

If the Pirates cannot come to terms with Liriano at the contract terms that the team wants? It was said, that the Pirates would be comfortable walking away from Liriano & going with either Locke or McPhearson in the rotation to start the yr.

This story, never sems to end.

I hope it works out & the Pirates & Liriano do finally agree, as I think that he could help our rotation alot.

I am getting very frustrated with this situation though.

As someone who always pulls for the Pirates to put something together, I'm crossing my fingers that you guys walk away from this guy. Guaranteed money is extremely risky - your organization doesn't need that! Tell him to forget it and use your top pitching prospect instead. :2cents:

Yeah if he is injured and not willing to compromise he isn't worth it now.

Assuming there's no lasting damage to Liriano's non-pitching arm, I remain hopeful that the Pirates can get the deal done. Pitching, especially starting pitching is SO important..... and a healthy and rejuvinated Liriano would make the Pirates' rotation SO much stronger and deeper..... that I think he's worth the risk. I support Huntington in this effort..... but agree with thedddd that Liriano must be willing to compromise and provide the team protection against his potential unavailability to start the season.

Oh yeah i agree he is worth the risk, just think if he isn't willing to work out a deal due to his issues (that had nothing to do with the Pirates) then I think they should let him go.

But there are sides to this story that seem to not have been leaked out so when it is all over it will be interesting to hear the reality of it. Just seems odd the whole situation.

According to Bucsdugout.com, via a tweet from Ken Rosenthal.

Francisco Liriano has passed his physical today. Thus, his deal with the Pirates is now finally official.

The exact terms of the deal have, as yet, not been released to the public.

However, the language protecting the Pirates with the contract is still believed to be in place.

It is still believed by many, that Liriano will miss a little time with his injury but he is now, officially a Pirate.

Good deal. I really like this rotation now & I am glad it's done.

By the way, sorry, if I spelled Kyle McPherson's name wrong in a previous post.

Hope I corrected it now?

Well, glad that's over.

Once we have details, I'll update the title of the thread to reflect the completion of the signing.

I like the new deal a lot. That first deal was pretty scary. This one seems pretty fair to me.

From MLB.com

The terms of the contract offer the club protection in the event the fracture, of the southpaw's right humerus, renders him unavailable for an extended period. Conversely, Liriano has protection if he is fit to pitch through the injury. All of the incentives are based on time spent on the active roster.
In addition to his $1 million guarantee, Liriano can earn an additional $3.75 million in 2013 based on the number of days he is not on the disabled list due to the right arm injury.

The 2014 club option is for $8 million, but it becomes a vested option at any of three levels -- $5 million, $6 million or $8 million — based on the number of days he is not DL-ed in 2013 due to the right arm injury.

If the 2014 option does vest at $5 million or $6 million, however, Liriano would still be able to reach the $8 million with bonuses based on games started in 2014.

The new deal is significantly better than the old deal. Thank jeebus.

Yep, its done.

Mazzaro outrighted to AAA to clear his 40man roster spot.

I know I'm pretty far to the apologist side of the apologist/hater scale. Having said that, our SP/OF/1st base depth is really impressive. We have solid backup plans for our backup plans. In the past, Locke and Mcpheason would have been penciled in at 3/4. Now its hard to see them making the team if everyone is healthy.

Actually I think Locke or McPherson will be in the rotation out of ST. I personally think Karstens was signed to be a bullpen guy. Then again, what do I know.

I do think at least two of the three will be on the roster out of spring training. It's just a question of which roles.

With Liriano in camp, the story has emerged that he broke his upper right arm by slapping a door with his right hand. I'm kinda baffled by that report. I'm NOT asserting that Liriano is being less than forthcoming about the event..... but it seems even more freaky and improbable than the original story about him falling in his bathroom. I can at least envision a guy slipping on a wet bathroom floor and striking his upper arm on a tub edge on the way down (or something like that)..... but breaking an arm by slapping a door?

Presumably, if there were some serious pre-existing condition which contributed to the break, the Pirates' medical staff would have found it, wouldn't they?

I guess I'll remain uneasy about this until Liriano recovers completely and proves it was nothing more than a freak injury. (For some reason, the Liriano situation reminded me of Dave Dravecky..... who was drafted originally by the Pirates and spent his first three years as a prospect in our farm system, before becoming a pretty good major league pitcher for the Padres and Giants.)

I broke my hand slapping a locker once. If you do it hard enough, and at just the right angle, something will break.

Yea, I believe it. Just a freaky thing to try to explain, even if it is true.

When I was in college, we were playing football, and one kid jumped to catch a pass, and came down and his leg snapped in half. He didn't even jump high or land sideways or anything. It was an awful site with his bone sticking out the side of his leg.
