Yeah it was discussed in another thread....

Anyway did anyone else hear this contract is still not official because he is yet to arrive in Pittsburgh for a physical?

I know it is nothing but a formality but with the Pirates luck he will fail now that Hanrahan is gone.

You mean like this???

JANUARY 8, 2:14pm: The two sides still have yet to finalize their agreement as Liriano injured his right arm in December, tweets Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The Bucs continue to talk to Liriano's agent, but there's no deal imminent at this time.

Sigh... When you're a Pirates fan, don't we almost expect something like this to happen?

I HOPE it's nothing serious, as I really liked the signing. However, knowing the luck of this organization & by extension, we as Pirates fans, it probably is.
The Pirates however, could always try to spin this into a good thing... such as having financial flexibility now, for the picked over crap that is left on the FA market.

Christ, will the worm ever turn?

NICE!

Typical Pirate luck. Just think they can go after the likes of Lohse, Marcum or Joe Saunders now.

Per, Tom Singer of MLB.com

Liriano's injury to his Non - Pitching arm was serious enough, that he never came to Pittsburgh for his team physical, once the deal was agreed to.

Singer, also said that while the Pirates & Liriano are still talking & that the Pirates could possibly still sign him? The Pirates are now looking at other options on the FA & Trade fronts & that the Pirates & Liriano's original 2 yr, 12.75M deal is off.

And, the hits just keep on comin!

It's like Groundhog Day with this team!

Jesus, can't something, anything, ever go right for us with this team???

Nope it seems to go south....

Pirates' Deal With Francisco Liriano On Hold: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Love the comment almost half way through about the conspiracy that Nutting planned this.
"Conspiracy Theory - The Nutting knew he was injured and would fail the physical. Trade Hanrahan. Save millions and call it a day. He's good!!!"

Sad but that is the one and only crazy conspiracy theory I believe....

Why were the Pirates offering Liriano a two contract to start with. This all started because he wouldn't sign Paul Maholm. Last year Erik Bedard and now Liriano.

There are better options out there.

This could be a blessing in disguise.

I agree. I think he might have a hot start in the NL, but will fade back to what he is for most of the 2 years. But who knows.

I saw some reports that he had injured his arm... but I have as of yet been unable to find out what he did exactly.. and why it would matter if it is his non pitching arm?

I mean did he cut the fucking thing off or something????

And the money and length of contract to me made sense.. Not too much money... not locking yourself into a dangerous long term deal...

And there would be the possibility ( not that our gm does this much ) that Liriano would have a good first season and get traded to a contending team for a nice package of prospects... or whatever.

But the Bucs made a trade yesterday for a back of the rotation starter...So it looks like they have moved on... but I am still going to hold out a little hope that they find a way to get Liriano in a Pirates uniform.

The whole situation is a little odd, yes. And I kind of liked the deal, too. I thought it was a worthwhile risk to take. I guess we'll have some idea in the coming weeks.

Unless the Pirates have a good pitching coach that can get through to him or something I wouldn't hold my breath on him.

I really do hope he figures it out and can help the Bucs because he has the ability to be good, he just hasn't been able to get back to it since his TJ surgery.

Lirriano is a very risky move. Head case and inconsistent.

:agree: If I were the Pirates, I wouldn't touch Liriano with a 10' pole. Do they really think they'll get $14M out of him over the next two years? There's no way! The Pirates should keep the money and hope everyone else in the NL Central signs him.

In my post right before yours it was Jeanmar Gomez for Lattimore.
Trust me Gomez will not be an end of rotation pitcher. At best a spot long relief pitcher who will start in AAA. Honestly if he is their 5th starter they will be in trouble. It goes with the long list of AAA junk they have to protect Locke or McPherson.

Best case for the Pirates now is the hope they can rework him to a lower deal that makes sense. Because if he misses anytime that money is not worth it.

With that said it will be interesting to find out what the injury is.

If the Pirates were good and players were willing to come to Pittsburgh I doubt they would take this gamble either.

Unfortunately they have to with the hope something sticks to the wall, like Eric Bedard last year. Also this would never have occurred if Edwin Jackson would have taken the 3 yr deal they offered last year.
