Detroit could and should jump on a prospect like Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson earlier than expected. The goal is simple when selecting so high: draft a difference-maker, regardless of where they're projected to be drafted.

Maybe that writer should give Mayhew a jingle and ask him how well drafting a TE in the TOP 10 works out.

The only TE worthy of a top 10 was Vernon Davis cause he was like 6'3, 250 and ran something crazy like a 4.35.
I am all for drafting a "superfreak" in the top 10, REGARDLESS of position. But I highly doubt this white boy is one of those types of athletes.

I am absolutely stunned that Trapasso has Kentucky CB Lonnie Johnson as his #5 CB yet alone if he had listed him in his top 12.

It appears to me Trapasso values Johnson's length more than anything. If his ranking of Johnson had any merit to it then it should have shown up in Lonnie Johnson's PD/INT. imo.

Lonnie Johnson College Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

Furthermore, All one would have to do is look at Johnson's play at the Senior Bowl practices and Game to see his performances were sub-par.

Johnson worked well with the teammates he had at Kentucky with Baity, West and Edwards.

He can still develop to be a nickel/dime package player but listing him at #5 overall seems to be quite a stretch. imo.

I think every year these "new kids on the block" analysts take one kid and place them super high and hope he hits so that they can make a name for themselves.

1 Mistake Each NFL Team Must Avoid Making in the 2019 NFL Draft

  1. Detroit Lions: Being Afraid to Select a Difference-Maker Despite Draft Status

It's easy to say the Lions should take whatever elite prospect falls to them at No. 8, but the reality is not that simple.

If Ohio State's Nick Bosa, Alabama's Quinnen Williams, Kentucky's Josh Allen and Michigan's Rashan Gary are off the board, Detroit could and should jump on a prospect like Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson earlier than expected. The goal is simple when selecting so high: draft a difference-maker, regardless of where they're projected to be drafted.

One other thing about taking a TE this high. Why not take a top end OT prospect and move him to OG. OG will play way more snaps and make way bigger of an impact per game than a TE. Also, if Wagner keeps sucking ass. You can put that high end prospect to RT and move Wagner inside.

Daniel Jeremiah's top 50 prospects for 2019 NFL Draft 2.0

just released on 02-25-2019...………….. 2:22 p.m.

@Stomp Hockenson up 9 spots to #5

@Old Lion JoeJuan Williams up 10 spots to #37

Still want Ed Oliver as the pick, but if that doesn't happen Hockenson or an offensive lineman would be fine though at 8

I should add in that many of these kids have issues with the drops so I had no intention of signaling out Butler solely. Arcega-Whiteside has had the same issues at times.

I watched 4 or 5 of his games on youtube and didn't see any issues with drops, but its a pretty small sample size he made some great catches. The only things i noticed was doesn't create separation on short routes.

Why not just keep the one you had!?!

Oh yeah, cuz he couldn't get rid of tJBC if he gave him talent to work with. Forgot for a second.

Reconciling Rashan Gary's production with his potential: is the Michigan star worth a top 10 pick?

With that nasty business out of the way, you can be confident that NFL coaches will want to work with Gary’s physical profile.

At 6-5 and 270-some lbs., I don’t think his change of direction skills are exceptional, but his quickness and acceleration jump off the tape. His closing burst to the quarterback and striking power are very good. He also showed toughness to play through a shoulder injury which hampered him all year and required him to miss three games, and flashed very good power to dislodge pass-setters in spite of that.

Gary also projects to make an immediate impact in the run game. He reacts very quickly to keys and senses pressure well. His length and fast, violent hands allow him to quickly stack and shed blockers at the point of attack, and he commands more than just a tight end’s attention. While he doesn’t consistently give effort in backside pursuit, he has next level range to affect plays between and beyond the tackles, and he casts a wide net and finishes at a high rate as a tackler.

His technical issues are a pass rusher are certainly correctable, but it’s troubling that Michigan, for one reason or another, did not coach some of these things out of him. I think he fits best as a strongside end in an even front, but I think he’s capable of playing weakside end in an odd front, and he’s capable of reducing to the interior in sub rushing situations.

By year two, he should be a good starter, but he will need to make technical improvements to maximize his pass rush potential, which is the most important trait for edges in the modern NFL.

Daniel Jeremiah not a fan of Ed Oliver or Rashan Gary to the Lions

NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah is one of the most respected members of the draft media. A former NFL scout and collegiate QB, his experience and fan-friendly manner lend him a high level of credibility.

Jeremiah hosted a media conference call on Monday. He didn’t have to wait long before getting a question about the Detroit Lions. The first question from the media panel involved the fit of Houston’s Ed Oliver and Michigan’s Rashan Gary to the Lions at the No. 8 overall pick.

On Oliver, who is expected to weigh around 290 pounds and can align all over a defensive front, Jeremiah downplayed the versatility aspect for Detroit’s scheme.

“(Oliver’s) got some versatility to move around there,” Jeremiah stated. “In
terms of the Lions, how they would use him, I think that’s becoming less and less of a thing.”

Even so, he sees a dynamic pass rusher.

“(Oliver) is so dynamic and so explosive, and it’s frustrating to watch him because they play him a lot head up over the center, and you talk to some D-line coaches, when you have an athlete like that, they say, ‘why would you line him up blocked?’

Let him get in a gap and let him get upfield where he can use that quickness and really be disruptive. I think he’ll benefit kind of from a move to that 3 technique full-time, park him in there and let him go.”

Daniel Jeremiah not a fan of Ed Oliver or Rashan Gary to the Lions

For Gary, Jeremiah sounded the opposite alarm.

“Rashan Gary is obviously a much bigger guy, but I view Gary as kind of an end. I don’t really want Gary in there two-gapping, either, I’d want to split him out wide and let him rush.”

Gary’s game for Michigan was less dynamic in 2018 while playing more of an outside attacking role than his prior seasons. His weight and performance in this week’s combine are critical to his draft role for every team, not just the Lions.

He doesn’t really see either player as an ideal candidate for the team’s needs at the No. 8 overall pick.

“I don’t know that either one of them is a perfect scheme fit there, but I think you’re just trying to find somebody that can be disruptive and kind of craft that role around their skills.”

we have so many starter positions and heavy #2 positions to be filled that I'd expect nothing more than a repeat to the top ten next year.

I highly doubt BQ/MP make the right calls on choices in FA and the Draft to fill those glaring needs in one off-season.

I like him, but he has Calvin Johnson telling him that he does not want to be drafted by the Lions. Makes it a tough sell.

Doesn't really matter what Calvin says. If he gets drafted by the Lions. That is who he plays for.

I actually have a little more faith with Fat Pat being able to pick his own players on defense. Bob Quinn on his own just picking players is a recipe for disaster. Teez Tabor anyone? Starting to come to the conclusion that U of Florida players are WAAAAY overhyped. Remember the other Florida CB that got picked top 10 a few years back? Fucking trash as well. Also Bryan Taven was someone people on this board wanted too. Dude has been invisible so far in his career too.

Who and what to watch at the 2019 NFL Combine: Interior defensive line

Interior defensive line traits to evaluate
There are several on-field drills that emphasize a player’s abilities and the main areas Lions’ scouts will likely be focusing for the defensive line are:

  • Balance starts at the knees.
  • Quick feet and lateral mobility.
  • Reaction time.
  • Power in their punch.
  • Head up. See the target, hit the target.

Who and what to watch at the 2019 NFL Combine: Interior defensive line

Dane Brugler

@dpbrugler

This isn't as crazy as it sounds. Oliver was 274 pounds in the fall when scouts went through campus and I know some teams question if he'll comfortably carry 280+. Easier to slim him down?

It's important to keep an open-mind w/ Oliver - because NFL teams are.

Lance Zierlein‏Verified account @LanceZierlein
I believe Ed Oliver should garner some consideration at inside backer. @TedyBruschi was an absolute dog as a pass rusher and he was undersized. The Pats thought outside the box and hit a HR. Ed is smaller than he's listed. But he's twitchy and instinctive. I think ILB is possible

Zierlein is thinking outside the box. I like the thought process but need to think about that.

MP uses his iDL more on a eat blockers, contain/control gaps and not true get vertical types unless OL breakdown. Allow the LB to come through with space and make plays if the DL haven't.
