I know that athletes say stuff like this a lot, but money can change that.
BUT, this is still very reassuring and gives hope that the Giants will be able to keep Timmeh-Cainer-Bum together for a very long time.
Also, I saw three weeks ago that Matt Cain is selling his house in Noe Valley. Has anyone heard why? There were no reason given. Hopefully, it is for an upgrade to a better area or larger home. I would hate to see Cain leave SF.
Saw this on MLBTR re Timmeh:
•The Giants offered Tim Lincecum at least $100MM over five years a couple months back, but it now it appears that the two sides are at least $75MM apart, with the right-hander looking for a seven- or eight-year deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
7 years/$175 million. Who does this kid think he is?! Barry Zito?!
In all seriousness, though, when all is said and done, Timmy will, likely, make at least that much over the next 8 years. Obviously, it won't be happening with one big contract, but there is one on the horizon. If it's with the Giants, great. If not, I hope SabeySabes can grab some prospects.
I don't want him for that much. We're not a small market by any means, but we're also not the Yankees who can absorb bad deals like it's nothing.
I'm fine with Cain and Madbum at the top of our rotation for the next 5-6 years. Take that massive fortune and invest it in some offense/back end pitching. Our outfield is barren after this year, and our middle IF needs some love.
Same thing goes for Wilson, the guy is awesome, but I don't want him for 4/44 or 4/50.
As for getting prospects for our stars. If we're out of it come sell time, then yeah, that makes sense. But if we're in a position to even take that death match spot, just hold onto them. Worked out brilliantly for the Cardinals with Pujols. Hopefully this mass of catching prospects that we've compiled turn into something so we can deal a surplus for a need.

Gary Brown?
Gary Brown?
– Tim Lincecum’s third outing: Solid, very solid if you take into account the first two. Four innings, one infield hit off Timmy’s leg (no damage), 1 unearned run, 2 walks, 4 whiffs. 56 pitches, 30 strikes. He had the snapper and the change both working and the fastball was consistently registering 92-93. Lincecum said he worked a bit to refine his mechanics and also had a chat with his dad Chris, who’s arrived a couple days ago. The old man just told Tim to relax and not overthink what he was doing. Must have worked. This wasn’t midseason form Lincecum — he has a big goal this year of reducing his pitch counts and also getting strike one earlier — but he’s back on track after giving up 11 hits and 6 runs in his first four innings spread over two starts.
On 30 in 30 this weekend, they were GLOWING about Brown, saying he will be a 5-tool player eventually. Peggy is also a poor-mans 5-tool player. We also get to see if Jones is for real or if Kieschnick can actually do something.
I saw that. They did love him; I was particularly shocked that Bowa saw him as 20-25 home-run guy someday. I hope I'm totally wrong on this, but I would not be shocked to see Brown's prospect status take a huge hit this year. There's something about his swing that I don't like - he seems vulnerable to hard stuff in and off-speed stuff away - and that ain't going to get the job done at higher levels.
What little I saw of him this Spring indicated no hole inside. Didn't see him swing much at away pitches.
Here's his stance:
His hands stay busy as the pitcher comes set, if anything they drift a bit forward and down. That leaves him open to the inside FB, which, if he starts looking early for those, will open up a hole away. IMO, he looks to be vulnerable to being worked. Just something I noticed last year, which is why I wasn't surprised he was not promoted to AA even after his torrid hitting to start the year. Note, in the linked video he hits a double.
Bottom line, Brown's speed and defense will probably make him a major leaguer, I just don't expect him to be much more than league average as a hitter.
So you see him like a Donell Nixon or Vince Coleman?
If the Texas Rangers can around and offered Profar, Martin Perez, Alexi Ogando and David Murphy for Tim, Wilson and (Joseph/Susac/Chez3) next offseason, would you take it?
Profar projects as a Hanley Ramirez type player, Perez could be the next Johan Santana, Ogando is a solid number 3/4 starter or a dominant arm in the pen and Murphy is a solid corner OF bat. Profar should be ready by 2014, the rest are ready now.
****Assuming we sign Cain long term
