I know that athletes say stuff like this a lot, but money can change that.

BUT, this is still very reassuring and gives hope that the Giants will be able to keep Timmeh-Cainer-Bum together for a very long time.

Regarding Timmy's quotes about "feeling more comfortable with shorter deals" and "I'd love to stay here my entire career". Of *course* he says that. But I get the feeling that he will go to whomever gives him the best deal once he becomes a free agent (or, maybe go somewhere he'd LIKE to go, if the team offers something really, really close to the best offer).

I'm just too cynical these days. When I hear one of Timmy's "I'd love to stay here forever" or "hey, there's much less stress with a short-term contract", I translate it into : "here's a good cover story about why I want to go to arb, so that I can fill my pockets with as much cash as possible, then hit FA and get even more cash." The thing that came to mind when I first read it was the scene in Bull Durham, where "Crash" is on the bus teaching 'Nuke' LaLoosh his "cliches" to use in the big leagues ...

- Crash Davis: It's time to work on your interviews.

- LaLoosh: My interviews? What do I gotta do?

- Crash Davis: You're gonna have to learn your clichés. You're gonna have to study them, you're gonna have to know them. They're your friends. Write this down: "We gotta play it one day at a time."

- LaLoosh: Got to play... it's pretty boring.

- Crash Davis: 'Course it's boring, that's the point. Write it down.
(beat)
"I'm just happy to be here and hope I can help the ballclub."

- LaLoosh: Jesus.

- Crash: Write, write -- "I just wanta give it my best shot and, Good Lord willing, things'll work out."

NUKE STARTS WRITING them down.

That is exactly what Timmy's quote is all about. If the Giants offered him 6 years for a total of $150M he'd take it in a heartbeat. But the Giants *aren't* offering him that much, for that long, and can't really come out and tell the truth : " I want to pocket as much money as I possibly can, and at this point in my career that is most likely to occur if I go to arbitration or sign a short contract that is close to what I would win in arbitration. Then, when I become a free agent I can get a massive 6-8 year contract for more money than I can ever spend. So that's what I am going to do."

Geez, when did I get so cynical? No, wait, that's not the right question. When did I start to realize that I am so cynical?

Also, I saw three weeks ago that Matt Cain is selling his house in Noe Valley. Has anyone heard why? There were no reason given. Hopefully, it is for an upgrade to a better area or larger home. I would hate to see Cain leave SF.

I think :

1) He *might* just keeping his options open (sell the house for a good price while he can, and then buy a new one in the 'burbs in 9 months IF he stays in SF)

2) This year Cain will make almost exactly the *total* of what he has earned in all his previous years added together. In one year, he's basically doubling his lifetime earnings. So he has money to spend on a *really* nice house.

Saw this on MLBTR re Timmeh:

•The Giants offered Tim Lincecum at least $100MM over five years a couple months back, but it now it appears that the two sides are at least $75MM apart, with the right-hander looking for a seven- or eight-year deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

7 years/$175 million. Who does this kid think he is?! Barry Zito?! ;)

In all seriousness, though, when all is said and done, Timmy will, likely, make at least that much over the next 8 years. Obviously, it won't be happening with one big contract, but there is one on the horizon. If it's with the Giants, great. If not, I hope SabeySabes can grab some prospects.

I don't want him for that much. We're not a small market by any means, but we're also not the Yankees who can absorb bad deals like it's nothing.

I'm fine with Cain and Madbum at the top of our rotation for the next 5-6 years. Take that massive fortune and invest it in some offense/back end pitching. Our outfield is barren after this year, and our middle IF needs some love.

Same thing goes for Wilson, the guy is awesome, but I don't want him for 4/44 or 4/50.

As for getting prospects for our stars. If we're out of it come sell time, then yeah, that makes sense. But if we're in a position to even take that death match spot, just hold onto them. Worked out brilliantly for the Cardinals with Pujols. Hopefully this mass of catching prospects that we've compiled turn into something so we can deal a surplus for a need.

Totally agree you can't sign a guy who throws like Timmy to a 7-8 year deal. But someone will. I hope he wins 2 more Cys before leaving.

Gary Brown?

On 30 in 30 this weekend, they were GLOWING about Brown, saying he will be a 5-tool player eventually. Peggy is also a poor-mans 5-tool player. We also get to see if Jones is for real or if Kieschnick can actually do something.

Gary Brown?

Obviously there's Brown, but what do we have in the corners? Nothing in the minors obviously.

I like Nate, but I honestly don't see him suddenly turning in to Markakis. I can live with him when we, hopefully, have two above average players in CF and LF. He is by no mean the man, and should not be the anchor of an outfield.

Here's some more info on Timmay from the Merc's Carl Steward:

– Tim Lincecum’s third outing: Solid, very solid if you take into account the first two. Four innings, one infield hit off Timmy’s leg (no damage), 1 unearned run, 2 walks, 4 whiffs. 56 pitches, 30 strikes. He had the snapper and the change both working and the fastball was consistently registering 92-93. Lincecum said he worked a bit to refine his mechanics and also had a chat with his dad Chris, who’s arrived a couple days ago. The old man just told Tim to relax and not overthink what he was doing. Must have worked. This wasn’t midseason form Lincecum — he has a big goal this year of reducing his pitch counts and also getting strike one earlier — but he’s back on track after giving up 11 hits and 6 runs in his first four innings spread over two starts.

Timmay is up around 92-93mph. A lot of the Giants earlier were questioning some of the radar guns. inandoutrepeat must be going nuts right now, lol.

I saw that. They did love him; I was particularly shocked that Bowa saw him as 20-25 home-run guy someday. I hope I'm totally wrong on this, but I would not be shocked to see Brown's prospect status take a huge hit this year. There's something about his swing that I don't like - he seems vulnerable to hard stuff in and off-speed stuff away - and that ain't going to get the job done at higher levels.

What little I saw of him this Spring indicated no hole inside. Didn't see him swing much at away pitches.

Here's his stance:

gary-brown-217x300.jpg

His hands stay busy as the pitcher comes set, if anything they drift a bit forward and down. That leaves him open to the inside FB, which, if he starts looking early for those, will open up a hole away. IMO, he looks to be vulnerable to being worked. Just something I noticed last year, which is why I wasn't surprised he was not promoted to AA even after his torrid hitting to start the year. Note, in the linked video he hits a double.

Bottom line, Brown's speed and defense will probably make him a major leaguer, I just don't expect him to be much more than league average as a hitter.

So you see him like a Donell Nixon or Vince Coleman?

If the Texas Rangers can around and offered Profar, Martin Perez, Alexi Ogando and David Murphy for Tim, Wilson and (Joseph/Susac/Chez3) next offseason, would you take it?

Profar projects as a Hanley Ramirez type player, Perez could be the next Johan Santana, Ogando is a solid number 3/4 starter or a dominant arm in the pen and Murphy is a solid corner OF bat. Profar should be ready by 2014, the rest are ready now.

****Assuming we sign Cain long term

IIRC correctly, Nixon had a huge hitch in his swing. Brown's better than that. And Vince Coleman on grass? As a mid-point expectation? Maybe.

You're giving them an ace, and a three time all star closer for a bunch of maybes - Can you say over pay?
