SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants ace Tim Lincecum, who can become a free agent when his current two-year deal ends after the 2013 season, said Friday he would like to stay with San Francisco for his whole career.

“[The two-year contract] says nothing about not wanting to be here or not wanting to be a Giant,” Lincecum said at the team's media day. “I’d love to be a Giant my whole career.”

Lincecum, 27, went 13-14 with a 2.74 earned-run average in 2011. He agreed to a two year, $40.5 million deal in January to avoid arbitration.

Last season was his with a losing record, in large part due to the Giants' historic offensive struggles. San Francisco scored no runs while he was in the game in seven of 33 starts, had one run six times and two runs five times, according to STATS LLC.

He earned $13.1 million last season when he completed a two-year deal worth $23.2 million.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was the winning pitcher in the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas in 2010.

In five seasons with the Giants, he has a career record of 69-41, a 2.98 ERA with 1,127 strikeouts.

Lincecum — the 10th overall draft pick out of Washington in 2006 — has been an All-Star in each of the past four seasons.

I know that athletes say stuff like this a lot, but money can change that.

BUT, this is still very reassuring and gives hope that the Giants will be able to keep Timmeh-Cainer-Bum together for a very long time.

The way I see it, Cain is likely going to stay for awhile because he has stated he loves SF so much he has moved his family there and will unlikely re-locate. Bum is here for 4 years at least, Tim was the last one left for wondering. While nothing is guaranteed, sounds nice.

Saw this too.

Sabean, on the belief around the league that the Giants eventually will have to pick between Cain and Lincecum: “Budget won’t be a factor. We’ll have enough wherewithal in the budget that we won’t have to pick. Whether that happens, I can’t predict. But we have it in the budget to sign both players.”

Sabean also said that increasing payroll to add players in midseason has "always been possible with our ownership group" according to John Shea of The San Francisco Chronicle

Sabean says Giants have the budget to sign both Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum long term; Cain making no guarantees; Lincecum frog-kicks himself into shape, Brian Wilson update, much more | Extra Baggs

While I would rather him say this than NOT say it...

Do you really expect him to act like a mercenary right after signing a big 2 year deal? Of course the Giants are his soul-mate team.

You dont expect him to start professing his love for all things Seattle and saying he doesnt like the Niners, do you? Who does that?

I don't mind if he doesn't like the Niners as long as he remains a Giant for as long as he has value as a Giant. If that means he is a Giant for his whole career, great. If at some point he is traded by the Giants to improve the team, that is also great. If he wins the next two Cy Youngs while leading the Giants to consecutive World Series Championships and demands a 10-year, $400 million dollar contract (or whatever is considered ridiculous in two years), then he gets to go to the Mariners or the Red Sox or the Yankees or the Dodg.......(too terrible to think).

Bottom line for me is this:

If both Timmeh and Big Daddy want to stay, they will get paid. Not only that, but you are seeing that they re-upped with Vogey, they extended Pablo, they are pot committed to Buster as their catcher for the foreseeable future, and they have two HUGE contracts coming off the books in the next two years. There is money for both, the question is how badly do they want to stay? I don't have much doubt that if Cain came back to Sabes with what other teams are offering once FA started, that Sabes wouldn't match it like yesterday....because if he doesn't after having said all that "money is not a factor" crap, he will be hung from the Golden Gate.

What else do you expect Timmy to say? He will not talk bad about San Francisco because he is there for two more years. Also, he needs to keep his image up and options open. His dad makes similar comments on the radio. He will be a free agent and if the Giants do not pony up for a big contract, then Timmy will go elsewhere. So, I do not think we should read into any remarks right now. It is like saying Timmy will leave because the offense was so bad last season. We just need to wait and see.

Personally, I do not see him leaving the West Coast, so that leaves out Boston, Chicago, and New York. His personality does not match the East Coast or Midwest. Plus, I think he and San Francisco fit.

Also, I saw three weeks ago that Matt Cain is selling his house in Noe Valley. Has anyone heard why? There were no reason given. Hopefully, it is for an upgrade to a better area or larger home. I would hate to see Cain leave SF.

I totally believe Tim wants to stay in SF. I also think that Cain does as well...however...

Both guys also want to get paid and have long term security. If we lose either or both of these guys it will be because the Giants won't offer the years...

We talked about the Cain move on another thread. My opinion is that he's doing what most young couples do -- move to the suburbs when they have kids. SF is not a kid friendly environment.

I think you are correct (well, at least I hope so). My wife and I are living here in the city for now, but plan to move out once we start having kids. She grew up here and has mixed feelings because of my childhood in a small town where we could play football and baseball out in the street, sometimes until 9pm. The city does not allow that, even in the great neighborhoods like Pacific Heights. Plus, there are plenty of crazy people in the city.

I do believe you are correct. The city is getting younger and geared towards singles. The 2010 Census revealed that the number of families left the city. Plus, the school lottery is confusing and sometimes works out unfavorably.

That, and his house didn't look kid friendly. Stairs, lots of stone corners, all of three feet away from the road, balcony in the back ect...

I lived in San Francisco as a kid. Near the Cow Palace. Some rough people over there.

Now, if they can just get Cain in the fold this could be their "Koufax, Drysdale" combo for 4 or 5 yars.

Please, at least have the decency to compare them to Marichal and Perry.

Lincecum, 27, went 13-14 with a 2.74 earned-run average in 2011.

During the game against the Doyers on MLB a night or two ago, they said that 4 of Lincecum's losses last year were against Kershaw, who was 5-0 against us.

Ouch.

Can we trade Zito for Kershaw?

They'd have to throw in Uribe for me to want to do that deal. Zito plays guitar you know.
