Where are we at with addressing this? Does Welsh have a chance to start? That is the main knock I have against this draft. However, for all we know, they never had a chance to take a LG without reaching for him.

It would be nice going into the season with this being addressed.

Rumor has it, they were planning to take a LG when they drafted Settle.

Of which Im thrilled they didnt reach for a LG and pass on Settle.

Right now AK or TN will be the starting LG unless some one beats them for the job OR we bring in a veteran. They still like Lavauo for the right price apparently.

I love the Settle pick and we made the right call. None of the options you mentioned make me feel better in all honesty...LOL.

Any thoughts on Christian taking over at LG? I read that Gruden said he would stay at Tackle. We brought in a lot of UDRFA like Welsh so maybe one of them take it? I doubt a FA would fix this. Perhaps trading for a LG could happen. We need to get this fixed as we have to improve the running game and protect Smith at all costs.

LG and C are the new 2017 NT. Hopefully they dont make the same mistake and go into 2018 with Lavau and Roullier (who are serviceable but preferably depth players).

While I agree those will probably be the biggest needs (throw in WR) I think the skins should look towards 2020 for QB when hopefully Fromm and Tua are both available.

The skins should have a decent amount of comp picks in 2019 and I know you cant trade them. Perhaps they trade some of their other picks in 19' to accumulate some assets for 20' in a potential move up for Fromm

Maybe that was the front offices thinking all along?

Actually the rules were changed as of last year. Comp picks can be traded. They cant be included in future draft compensation. So basically, although we expect to get 2-4 comp picks next year, we could not have inclcuded those comp picks in a draft trade this year. Its kind of like saying, I know Im probably going to get this money, but I cant base a purchase on a raise I expect to get in two months.

Once the comp picks are awarded in the start of the 2019 season, they can be traded. Thats how we ended up with the 256th pick, the Rams traded it to us. As that pick is always a comp pick.

good to know. just so i completely understand, can you trade a 2019 comp pick in 2019 for future draft considerations like 2020?

say we get awarded a 3rd round comp pick for Cousins could we trade that for a 2020 2nd round pick? etc

Yep... you can spend the draft picks once you have them. For all intents we currently have 7 draft picks in 2019 and 7 in 20020. What ever comp picks we get in 2019 will add to that 7 and we can spend them how we choose with no restriction on ability to trade them for picks/players during the 2019 season, or we can deal them for future normally allocated picks.

start accumulating assets for 2020

thats what I would do with the added draft capital

Thats all going to depend on how Smith does this season I would think.

If this team makes the playoffs, and Smith does well. That would make him a viable QB for the next 3-4 years (Basically his current contract).

If the team, and more precisely Smith, struggles. Then yes smart people would gear up to take a QB in 2020, if not sooner.

Even if they drafted a qb in top 5 in 2020 he could still open season as starter with the rookie sitting behind him ala Mahomes

He could. But for the same reason I didnt want to see us draft a QB high in this draft, I wouldnt want to see us do that in 2019 or 2020. This front office has not shown a level of patience, and unlike in Kansas City, the fan base is not the type to simply let the process ride out. If we drafted a QB in the first or second round, every call or comment would be, when do we bench or cut Smith and start the new savior. So sadly, if we draft a QB early, he will most likely be starting as a rookie.

No, you generally don't see guys that tall and with that kind of length being effective guards. The QB's got to see over them, and they need to wrestle in smaller spaces than tackles do. He and Nsekhe will/should stay at tackle. They talk bravely about Arie, but I doubt their starting LG is on the roster right now. Welsh could be the long-term answer, but counting on a rookie UFA would be very unusual.
