I have big, humongous problems with "points per salary $" stats so I have no interest in "going there" but I'm pretty sure his production is just fine when compared to the people getting paid what he gets paid.
He gets paid what the market for people like him dictates. If the Sharks weren't paying him $6+M, about half the other teams in the league would. It's the going rate for that type of consistent production even though you guys don't like it to be.
he produces less than what the people around him do for most people. Certainly not all as guys like gomez are obviously pretty far behind. However, you are right that he is paid at or near the market rate. Im not sure he is at the rate since if parise (a better player with bigger numbers and much younger) gets 7.5, the patty is likely around 6-6.5M on the market. That said, it's within range for sure and no more than 1M overpaid if at all.
That said, the market is often wrong and desperate (see deals for guys like redden, gomez, etc.) Just cuz one team says a guy is worth some amount doesnt make it so. Also, if patty is at the market rate, then one could assume he could be dealt for good value in return.
Toronto needs a #1C. They are trying to shove JVR there, but that's iffy. Patty was C most of his life. Maybe dougie can work that...
patty + Murray for franson, bozak, and 1st rounder. Theyd have yet another solid young Dman (cant have too many of those), a top 6 forward at a good age (albeit to-be-ufa) and save roungly 6M to sign Doan. Basically it would be Patty+murray for Doan, Bozak, franson and a 1st rounder (likely to be high). And dougie would still have 5M left on the cap to work a deal for nash.
Obviously it's not gunna happen, so i dunno why i even go down this road...
