The first Van Halen album and nothing else compares. I was okay with 1984 despite the keyboards. Women and Children First was crappy. The second album wasn't much better. So Van Halen over Van Haggar because of the first album.

Sammy Hagar is about the nicest, most genuine guy you'll ever meet in your life and infinitely more talented than Dave, even with half of Peru up his nose.

I saw Van Halen in 1995 at Rupp Arena and after the first song Sammy goes to midstage, downs half a 40 of Budwesier and in operatic voice goes "I want some pussaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay" and holds it for what seemed like 90 seconds.

Don't EVEN compare Dave with Sammy Hagar.

agreed. roth is a super douche-nozzle but the early Halen was the better version.

...and Roth was a big reason why. His style as a front man helped differentiate VH from any band that came before or since. Hagar may be a better technical singer, but the end result doesn't have that same swagger. He changed VH from a lusty party band to a love songs band (along with Eddie's aging tastes too, of course).

Agreed. A lot of show biz people are successful because they have a larger than life douche personality. And van Hagar was more pop rock unfortunately

Love Gary in Extreme, but he was in VH at the worst possible time. Eddie decided to get weird with his songwriting.
